Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Job Description

A postdoctoral position to study the molecular mechanisms underlying retinal neuronal dysfunction and neurovascular crosstalk in diabetic retinopathy is available at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

We are using high-throughput-based approaches as well as targeted in vitro and mouse models to study the effects of diabetes on retinal neurons and to investigate molecular mechanisms underlying dysregulation of synapse assembly and neuronal signaling in early diabetic retinal disease. The postdoctoral fellow will lead project(s) to elucidate the roles of novel candidate genes and biomarkers associated with early diabetic retinal dysfunction, and identify novel mediators of neurovascular communication in the retina. In addition to independently designing and conducting experiments, the candidate will participate in manuscript and grant preparation, presentation at meetings, and supervision of trainees. This position also provides the opportunity to work closely with, and receive additional mentorship from, Drs. Ted and Valina Dawson and their cutting-edge neurodegeneration laboratory in the Johns Hopkins Institute for Cell Engineering.

We are seeking highly motivated candidates with a PhD or MD/PhD degree in the fields of neuroscience, ophthalmology, genetics, or cell/molecular biology. Proficiency with transgenic mouse models and molecular biology required. Prior experience with stem cell culture and phenotyping rodent models of retinal disease, including visual electrophysiology and histology/immunostaining of the retina, preferred. The ideal candidate will also have a strong background in molecular neuroscience.  Candidates are expected to have a demonstrated record of achievements and publications, excellent organizational and communication skills, and independent critical thinking abilities. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Applicants should submit their CV, a cover letter outlining interest and motivations, and names and contact information of three references to Dr. Mira Sachdeva at msachde4@jhmi.edu
