Summary

The University of Michigan-Dearborn seeks a specialist in African American History or an allied field to fill a one-year non-tenured LEO Lecturer III position to start Aug 28, 2023. We are open to a broad range of research specializations that center the Black experience and history.

The successful candidate will join a diverse urban campus with a vibrant African and African American Studies program that serves students in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters as well as those from across the 9,000 student campus. AAAS courses are popular with students seeking general education credit. The program also hosts a number of student and community facing events on campus, offers significant mentoring for students, and collaborates with other interdisciplinary college programs on campus and community initiatives. We seek a creative teacher and scholar interested in supporting such interdisciplinary work and who will help advance our campus mission of recruiting and retaining a diverse student body, including first-generation students.

There are a number of existing courses crosslisted between the History discipline and the African and African American studies program from which the successful hire could choose. These include upper division courses on West African and African American history, an introductory course on African history, the Black Atlantic, and a course on the American Civil Rights Movement.

This is a one-year non-tenured LEO Lecture III appointment, with no presumption of renewal although the African and African American Studies program expects to post multiple tenure track job openings in the following year. The program would welcome an application from this appointment for a permanent position, should the lines be approved. This appointment is subject to final approval by the academic unit.
