You will be part of a collegial, and dynamic International Studies Team composed of advanced subject specialists and technical service professionals who are committed to public service and the values of scholarly knowledge exchange. You will report to the Director of International Studies.

We are looking for a creative and service-oriented individual to serve as the Librarian for Western European Studies, liaison to the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures, the largest such department in the country, and to the Center for European Studies. You will provide subject specific services and collection support for scholars and students that anticipate and meet information needs related to the languages, cultures, or histories of the region, across all phases of the research lifecycle. You will participate in student and faculty events and programs to represent the Library and to foster communication, and encourage  participation in Library events and programs. You will work with other librarians across the humanities and social sciences to support interdisciplinary collections and services, including participation in digital projects.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the liaison to the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures and to the Center for European Studies and support the faculty and student activities in a variety of ways, including digital scholarship and research data services.
  • Provide outreach to other related academic departments and the local community.
  • Provide specialized reference, research consultations and instruction for faculty and students in the area of Western European Studies.
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of online research guides and tutorials, and offer specialized workshops on relevant library resources and services.
  • Provide leadership and coordination for acquiring, managing, and assessing collections that support research and instruction in the fields of Western European Studies.
  • Maintain vendor and book dealer contacts and cultivate relationships with donors.
  • Participate in the Library's advancement, fundraising, and stewardship efforts, and in local, regional and national consortia and organizations.
  • Engage in research, digital scholarship, scholarly publication, and service activities appropriate to academic librarianship and the disciplines served.

Required Qualifications*

  • Advanced degree in the area of German Studies or related field; or ALA-accredited master's degree in Library or Information Science; or equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in a research library or equivalent research setting.
  • Spoken and written proficiency in German.
  • Working knowledge of French or Italian.
  • Demonstrated subject competence in Western European Studies, including knowledge of traditional and new sources and research methods.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience managing collection budgets, approval plans and vendor relations.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of digital scholarship, and familiarity with new digital tools, methodologies, and programs supporting new research, teaching, and learning.
  • One or more years of teaching experience in a library or academic setting.

Additional Information

Appointment is anticipated at the Associate or Senior Associate Librarian rank. Salary is dependent on the candidate's qualifications and experience. The target salary range for this position is $62,000 to $69,000 for the Associate Librarian rank and $67,000 to $81,000 for the Senior Associate Librarian rank.

This appointment is subject to the UM/LEO-GLAM collective bargaining agreement.

Librarian appointments carry with them increased expectations regarding professional development, professional engagement, research, and service, in keeping with the library's process for librarian promotion and advancement.
