Responsibilities*

In addition to the duties of a Medical Technologist, the Medical Technologist Specialist must perform one or more of the following specialized duties or other significant duties identified by the individual laboratory

  1. Perform role of Key Operator for testing equipment. Perform specified instrument maintenance, QC, and calibration procedures.
  2. Troubleshoot and resolve instrument problems.
  3. Assist with the development, modification, validation, calibration, and implementation of laboratory equipment and working procedures.
  4. Assist with quality projects and other data collection projects on a routine basis.
  5. Serve as a resource person to medical technologists and lab techs, as well as other healthcare professionals.
  6. Monitor stocks of laboratory reagents and supplies and reorder as necessary.
  7. Advanced troubleshooting of automated instrument issues or manual test methods.
  8. Assist Senior technologist or supervisor in direct observation competency evaluations.
  9. Assist Senior technologist or supervisor with PT submissions.
  10. Create/Organize training plan and material, and observe Medical Laboratory Science students, new employees, and pathology residents in bench procedures and theory.

Perform Testing Maintain expertise/competency in all areas of training, always putting patient work ahead of specialized duties

 

Professional Development Fulfill departmental continuing education requirement.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Monitor stocks of laboratory reagents and supplies and recommend reorder as necessary for instruments.
  2. Process and analyze specimens and otherwise fulfill all duties and responsibilities of a medical technologist.
  3. Assist Senior Clinical with competencies.
  4. Assist in resolution of complex diagnostic problems.
  5. Assist in maintaining quality control
  6. Assist in maintenance and troubleshooting instruments
  7. Assist in evaluating new equipment
  8. Assist in planning and implementing new assays and/or processes.
  1. Must possess:

    3. Maintain the privacy of peers and staff, be understanding of errors, find ways to help avoid the errors, and do not spread gossip or share the errors with others.

Required Qualifications*

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science or other biological science.
  • Two years clinical experience is required.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist or eligibility for certification at the time of hire.
  • Specialized laboratories may accept a bachelor’s degree in a biological science with certification eligibility specific to that laboratory.

NOTE:  

  1. Works with infectious disease and/or hazardous materials.
  2. May have exposure to noise from laboratory equipment and pneumatic tube system.
  3. Requires frequent (standing/walking/sitting/hand pipetting) for long periods of time and the ability to lift up to 10lbs.

Desired Qualifications*

Previous minimum 2 years of experience in a clinical laboratory

Work Schedule

This full time, 40 hour position is on the evening shift and will require participation in a rotating weekend, holiday, and on-call work schedule with other staff.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
