Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Coordinator for Admissions and Rural Recruitment develops and implements comprehensive strategies for recruitment targeting rural student populations with an emphasis on in-state students under the direction of the Associate Director of Admission and Diversity Initiatives.

The Coordinator will be responsible for supporting relationships with school district administrators and staff, university personnel, and community-based organizations for the purpose of developing and sustaining special outreach programs and partnerships targeting rural student populations with an emphasis on recruitment and enrolling students from rural areas. The Coordinator will work to execute a recruitment plan that supports the University’s commitment to diversity.

The Coordinator will assist with the training and coordination of admission staff, current students, faculty, staff, and alumni in activities and initiatives that advance the university’s mission to maintain a diverse student body. The Coordinator will assist prospective students and families with the college application process; monitor and analyze trends in rural student diversity; and cultivate and maintain relationships with access-oriented agencies and related external organizations aimed at providing pathways to admission for students from rural areas.

The Coordinator will also serve as a member of the admissions committee and review applications for general admission to the university, represent the university at high school visits and college fairs in an assigned recruitment territory, conduct group presentations at events on and off campus, and participate in the development and execution of campus and yield events and projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
A Bachelor’s degree is required.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of three (3) years experience in college or university admissions, rural affairs, or a related field, as well as demonstrated experience working with students and families from backgrounds that are underrepresented in higher education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to interact positively and professionally with students, parents, and alumni, and successfully work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong time management skills and resourcefulness.
  • A strong sense of initiative and self-direction and the ability to demonstrate a positive attitude.

Other:
  • This position requires the ability to travel and work evenings and weekends at various times during the year.
  • This position requires an incumbent to possess and maintain a driver’s license valid in the State of Maryland with fewer than six (6) points. 

Preferences:

  • Master’s degree.
  • Direct experience related to the recruitment and yield of rural students.

Physical Demands

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to lift and small carry parcels, packages and other items, to walk short distances, and drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials.
