Job Summary

As a member of the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, the Director of Pathway Programs and Faculty Pipeline Initiatives is a new position that will provide leadership for efforts focused on the planning and implementation of activities that support the School's goals of increasing racial, cultural, and gender diversity among our faculty. The role will also be responsible for the establishment of experiences that support the success and retention of faculty from underrepresented backgrounds and historically marginalized identities.

The core priority areas tied to this position center on 1) Faculty pipeline strategy development, and 2) The coordination of two cohort-based pathway programs (i.e. Yerby Fellowship Program, and the Donald Hopkins Predoctoral Scholars Program).


Position Description

Job specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Collaborate with Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) and Chief Diversity, Inclusion, & Belonging Officer (CDIBO) and on faculty diversity pipeline development; planning and implementation of general practices related to faculty recruitment, hiring, & retention.

  • Partner with OFA to develop database of previous and potential doctoral graduates, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty from historically marginalized and underrepresented communities – track communications, outreach, and engagement with prospective candidates.
  • Assist with outreach and engagement activities for prospective candidates in faculty pipeline database.
  • Maintain and provide relevant outreach lists, posting locations, and candidate leads to search committees to support increasing diversity of faculty applicant pools.
2.  Oversee core activities of the Yerby Fellowship Program through collaboration with the Office of Faculty Affairs.
  • Advise OFA on best practices for supporting Yerby fellows during the recruitment process; participate as ex-officio member of the fellowship review committee and support with agenda planning and development for Yerby Advisory Committee meetings.
  • Help promote academic success of the fellows, and their retention in the program, via regular 1:1 mentoring check-in meetings with each Yerby Fellow during the academic year.
  • Provide guidance on development of communications, informational material, and web content
  • Evaluate and capture feedback of Yerby Fellows to inform strategic planning and action steps within Yerby Fellowship Program.
3. Oversee core activities of the Donald Hopkins Predoctoral Scholars Program through collaboration with program’s steering committee.
  • Provide guidance on development of communications, informational material, and web content; develop assessment, evaluate program, and capture feedback from Donald Hopkins students to inform strategic planning and action steps within Donald Hopkins Scholars Program; generate end of year annual report highlighting progress and outcomes of the program.
  • Serve as Co-Chair of the Donald Hopkins Steering Committee; and support with agenda planning and development for Yerby Advisory Committee meetings.
  • Participate in the student selection process.
  • Promote academic success and retention of the Scholars via holding 1:1 monthly mentoring check-in meetings and regular communication with the cohort.
4. Assist CDIBO with coordination of the Career Success Seminars, New Student Orientations, Donald Hopkins Scholars Lecture and Alonzo Yerby Diversity in Public Health Lecture events each year.
  • Identify key issues and interests among faculty to inform seminar topics, themes, and curriculum.
  • Collaborate with CDIBO and key partnering offices in the identification of potential speakers.
  • Facilitate outreach to tentative speakers and confirm details for event (e.g. time, day, title.
  • Develop marketing and communication content for events; develop assessments, evaluate activities, and secure feedback from faculty participants on experience and impact of developed seminars.
  • Develop itinerary for designated speakers that includes lecture event, pre-lecture preparatory meetings with Help Desk/Information Technology, and additional introductory meetings with key stakeholders (e.g. Dean of Faculty, students, faculty, for example, and as appropriate).
5. Participate in and provide support with ODI signature activities within department, as assigned.

6. Other

  • Supervise assigned EDI Fellow, as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.     

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
  • 7+ years of relevant experience is required

Additional Qualifications and Skills

The following job-specific skills and competencies are preferred:

  • Master’s Degree, especially in a related field, is a strong plus
  • Experience supporting educational and career success of postdoctoral fellows and faculty
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Experience working with pipeline programs within institutions of higher education
  • Experience developing and utilizing networks and communities of practice to further efforts
  • Experience in a faculty role at an institution of higher education     
  • Experience with: Instruction design, MS Office Suite, Zoom, and Outlook
  • Experience building strong relationships and foster an integrated team approach with all members of the campus community to advance a truly inclusive culture
  • Demonstrated capacity to conceptualize, build, and continuously improve effective programs and processes across the university
  • Exceptional communication (verbal and written), organizational, mediation, problem-solving, decision-making, and interpersonal skills, combined with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and students having a range of backgrounds, interests, and perspectives

  • Awareness of and aptitude to appropriately and effectively understand, respect, and adapt to cultural and identity-based difference within group environments
  • Knowledge of and commitment to concepts and issues tied to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Skills related to creating and supporting an environment that allows for inclusion, effective intercultural engagement, and personal humility and authenticity
  • Experience fostering and reinforcing an environment that values unique experiences, cultures, backgrounds, and goals
