Who We Are

Utilities is a division of Facilities and Operations, made up of 135 dedicated employees responsible for providing utilities services for the university 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Services include campus-wide utilities purchasing, generation, and distribution, as well as metering and billing energy consumption for all university buildings. Distribution includes the operations and maintenance of 300 miles of underground utility systems from outdoor lighting and high voltage circuits to water mains to tunnel piping. The division also provides a wide range of engineering services primarily dedicated to energy management, operations and maintenance of university facilities, and utilities infrastructure.

The University of Michigan North Campus Research Complex operates a Combined Cycle Cogeneration Central Energy Plant (CEP). The CEP supplies much of the research complex with electricity, compressed air, domestic hot water and high and low pressure steam. The Central Energy Plant has boilers, heat recovery steam generators, chillers, building management systems, air compressors, combustion turbines, and many associated systems.

Responsibilities*

This position is responsible for assisting with the oversight of the operation and maintenance of the Central Energy Plant. This individual will be a member of the CEP management team, and will report directly to the Plant Manager. This person is expected to work with a variety of individuals at many levels of the organization, working both independently and as part of a team. The successful candidate will be self-directed, and is expected to provide insights into plant operations and maintenance, while enacting proactive improvements to processes and programs.

Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Provide Maintenance support as assigned by the NCRC Plant Manager, including but not limited to:
    • Evaluate the maintenance backlog. Prioritize and lead the Planning and Scheduling of maintenance work.
    • Assist with response to emergent work.
    • Provide oversight of the lockout programs in the CEP. This includes determining scope of lockouts, updating lockout procedures, ordering needed supplies, and coordinating work with various groups inside and outside the plant.
    • Inspection of plant equipment which requires traversing under and over obstacles, ascending/descending ladders, maneuvering into confined spaces, and occasionally moving powerhouse equipment and materials weighing up to 50lbs. Must be able to perform the full range of duties, with or without reasonable accommodation, in the classification in an environment that has high levels of heat and noise.
    • Evaluate critical spare part inventories and coordinate appropriate stocking levels
    • Ensure proper asset tagging of new and existing equipment
    • Manage site PM program 
    • Update and correct Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams for the plant, working closely with plant operators and engineering staff.
  • Provide Operations support as assigned by the NCRC Plant Manager including but not limited to:
    • Update log and rounds sheets as needed, working with the Plant Manager and plant operators. Review daily operating logs.
    • Write and update operating procedures
  • Assist with oversight and implementation of the training program including training of plant operations and maintenance staff as assigned. 
  • Assist in startup and commissioning of new equipment.
  • Provide oversight of the chemistry programs to ensure optimum efficiency and longevity of water systems, steam systems, boilers and waste water systems.
  • Assist with timekeeping duties for the plant hourly staff. 
  • Work with EHS to ensure compliance with environmental compliance and reporting requirements. These programs include wastewater discharge, storm water hazardous waste management, Safety Data Sheets, Pollution Incident Prevention plans, Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure, etc.  
  • Act in accordance with the Facilities and Operations' guiding principles: collaboration, respect, proactive, solutions-based, and responsibility to the environment. 

Required Qualifications*

  • Associates Degree in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or other technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience with power plant operations and water treatment.
  • Experience operating and troubleshooting: Chillers, combustion turbines, DCSs, boilers, HRSGs, reverse osmosis units, condensate polishers, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, and other power plant equipment.
  • Practical knowledge, ability and experience training others on the operation of power generation systems.
  • Good troubleshooting skills and the ability to think of creative solutions for technical issues.
  • Physical ability to conduct equipment inspections, obtain samples for general and failure analysis.
  • Ability to proficiently use Microsoft Excel, Work, Power Point and Google software. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Self-Directed: manage self with little supervision. 
  • Experience working with power plant operations and maintenance groups.
  • Experience leading or coordinating projects.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Sciences or other technical discipline.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in a Power Plant, with Combined Cycle Cogen experience preferred.
  • Ability to conduct basic metallurgical failure analysis.
  • Ability to develop and manage financial budgets.
  • Experience developing and managing capital improvement projects.
