Essential Job Duties
The Horticultural Specialist position is a hands on labor intensive position providing year round landscape maintenance to improve the care and culture of the diverse plant life within the NC State University campus. Hands-on tasks include but are not limited to pruning, weeding, mulching, blowing, planting, watering and debris removal. This position is required to apply sound horticultural practices and integrated pest management procedures on university campus and serve as an area plant care expert. The Horticultural Specialist will ensure that all service agreements with plant maintenance responsibilities are met according to the contracts with our campus customers. (i.e. – fertilization, maintenance, pruning and soil testing).
The position fields evaluations of plant conditions and makes recommendations to the supervisor for improvement, monitors and identifies diseased plants, as well as analyzes the results of testing and corrects the problem. Position will provide information to Supervisor as needed on grounds activities and makes recommendations for plant needs. This position acts as a training resource, based on knowledge and experience in different aspects of plant care for the Grounds Maintenance staff. Additionally, the position will be required to troubleshoot any landscape maintenance concerns, and report findings to supervisor
Other Responsibilities
Aid in snow, debris removal and/or storm damage as directed by supervisors.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Experience/Education
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: North Carolina Pesticide License may be required and can be obtained within six months of employment; North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License may be required.
Other Required Qualifications
- Must be able to effectively communicate verbally with supervisors and the general public.
- Position should be able to understand verbal and written instructions regarding work assignments and other matters.
- Position serves in a critical role requiring the employee to potentially work during adverse weather conditions even if the University is closed to normal operations.
- Horticultural/Grounds maintenance experience and/or green roof maintenance experience
Preferred Qualifications
- A high level of applicable horticultural care and maintenance, with some irrigation knowledge.
- Three to five years of grounds maintenance and/or arboriculture experience.
- Fall Protection Training preferred, but will be provided upon employment
- Optional Green Roof Professional Accreditation preferred, but not required for position
Required License or Certification
- Valid driver’s license required.
- North Carolina driver’s license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
