Job Summary

The Furniture & Moving Technician will move, install, maintain, and repair Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) furnishings under the supervision of the Furniture & Moving Specialist III. This includes reading work order directions and room layouts then making the approved changes in classrooms, offices, conference rooms, and other areas with the tools provided in a timely manner. Assist the Events Setup Team with setup, teardown, and cleanup for special events for the various SLCC campus locations, as needed. Operate furniture box truck to complete deliveries and pickups from site to site per assigned work orders. Report any needs for maintenance and repairs of equipment.
The position has a regular schedule but may require flexibility as needed based on project and event setup needs.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Setup and teardown classrooms, offices, conference rooms, and other furniture.
  • Read and follow work order directions for room layouts and placement requests.
  • Move tables, chairs, lecterns, lab equipment, storage, and other items as needed.
  • Move and lift very heavy objects, 100 lbs. or more by using appropriate tools, equipment, carts, and dollies.
  • Assess needs and problem solve furniture and moving related issues.
  • Communicate effectively, follow directions, and ask questions as needed.
  • Maintain and repair SLCC college furnishings with the use of hand tools and equipment.
  • Drive moving trucks to make deliveries and pick up donations from site to site per assigned work orders.
  • Operate various kinds of machinery such as man lifts, forklifts, and drive cargo vans and large delivery trucks. Training and certifications are required and provided prior to operating equipment.
  • Assist Surplus Team in removing furniture.
  • Assist Events Setup Team with setting up, tearing down, and cleaning up for special events as needed.
  • Move tables, chairs, storage with using appropriate tools, equipment, and dollies as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.
Zero (0) to one (1) year full-time paid related work experience.
Need to have a valid Utah Driver’s License.
Trade-off 1:1 in experience/education requirement.
Part time experience may be considered on a prorated basis.

Preferred Qualifications

One (1) year of direct full-time work experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to learn and apply proper safety procedures and techniques for furniture setup and moving.
  • Ability to manage multiple furniture and moving projects while maintaining fulfillment accuracy and positive customer service relations.
  • Ability to setup and teardown classrooms, offices, conference rooms, and other areas including reading work order directions and room layouts.
  • Ability to work effectively with a team or independently.
  • Ability to complete time sensitive work.
  • Fulfill training requirements for position.
  • Maintain and repair SLCC college furnishings.
  • Demonstrate effective teamwork with all staff, faculty, and students.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Receive and follow verbal/written instructions.
  • Computer and data entry skills.
  • Basic MS Office, particularly Excel, Word, and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to track work orders.
  • Ability to safely lift 75 lbs., stoop, bend on a regular basis, and use a ladder.
  • Basic maintenance and tool usage.
  • Ability to operate different kinds of machinery such as man lifts, forklifts, and drive heavy large delivery trucks.
  • Operate furniture box truck to complete deliveries and pickups from site to site per assigned work orders.
  • Load, deliver, and install furniture pieces.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
