Advisor II, Early College Academy
Job Description
The purpose of the Advisor is to serve as an academic advisor for high school students participating in Concurrent Enrollment courses and programs.
This person will also be responsible for assisting students with advising needs and career exploration related to career and major choices. Position will provide registration and enrollment for students, including admissions paperwork, registration assistance, and guidance regarding courses leading toward college degree completion and college graduation requirements.
This position is expected to work ten (10) out of twelve (12) months per year and will receive deferred pay for the two months’ not working. Work hours for this position are Monday – Friday 7:15am – 3:45pm with some weekends and evenings as required.
- Keep accurate log notes that reflect the discussion and essential information conveyed to students.
- Enroll students into courses.
- Collect admissions paperwork, advise students on filling out all necessary forms.
- Teach students job seeking skills on an individual and group basis as needed by utilizing appropriate resources to include computer software and other technology.
- Create and present workshops on resume writing, interview techniques, and job search strategies to classes.
- Conduct mock interview sessions with students and provide feedback to the students regarding how to improve their interviewing skills.
- Evaluate and critique resumes in individual/group settings.
- Assist the Assistant Director II, Early College Academy and School Counselor with developing programs of support for Concurrent Enrollment students.
- Establish college-focused events including financial aid information sessions, four-year college admission assistance, locating scholarships at four-year schools, etc.
- Assist with new student recruitment events and programming.
- Follow procedures for ECA Early Alert system.
- Meet with referred students and create a plan with the student to get back on track in classes.
- Work collaboratively with faculty to identify programming opportunities for student success in college classes.
- Meet individually with students to discuss their academic goals/plans as needed.
- Develop educational/degree plan with each student.
- Assist in the mediation between students, staff, and faculty when advising problems or concerns arise.
- Input and retrieve information from Workday.
- Utilize resources (paper and electronic), such as transfer guides, to assist students in course selection and career goals.
- Teach students how to problem solve by identifying alternative options as they relate to their life and career goals.
- Explain financial aid processes and connect students to appropriate resources (e.g. FASFA forms and scholarship options).
- Engage in the career planning process by explaining the connection between majors, interests/abilities, and career goals.
- Teach students how to register on line and use Web Services features.
- Refer students to appropriate resources based upon their needs (e.g. orientation, disability access, etc.).
- Instruct students how to use other institutions’ transfer guides and plan for successful college entry.
- Meet with students who have been laced on academic probation/suspension to determine causes of poor academic performance and identify the next proactive steps for the student to engage in.
- Respond within 24 hours to student phone calls and e-mail inquiries.
- Maintain currency on advising information by attending meetings and conferences and reading various materials.
- Master’s degree in Advising, Career Counseling, or other related filed, plus two (2) years’ of related work experience such as; in advisement, career counseling, or teaching at a post-secondary level, or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experience.
