Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy (www.pharmacy.unc.edu) is one of five health science schools (Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, Public Health, Medicine) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is one of the oldest health science academic programs at Chapel Hill. The SGC-UNC is looking to hire a postdoctoral associate interested in developing their skills in Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology. The postdoctoral associate will join a multidisciplinary team working to develop small molecule drug leads within the READDI Antiviral Drug Discovery Center. The postdoctoral associate will develop structure-activity relationships for the viral enzymes targets and design new analogs to improve potency, selectivity, and drug-like properties. All research will be conducted in an Open Science laboratory to facilitate rapid publication, presentation, and sharing of data. The SGC-UNC, a research center within the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, is the US site of the Structural Genomics Consortium, a non-profit, public-private partnership that currently includes eight of the largest pharmaceutical companies and academic research laboratories at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, University of Toronto, University College London, the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, and Goethe University Frankfurt. The SGC works on pre-competitive projects to discover new drugs and create new approaches to better understand and cure diseases. The SGC is committed to Open Science, sharing knowledge, data and reagents, which has led to a collaborative network of more than 250 international partners.
Position Summary
The SGC-UNC is looking to hire a postdoctoral associate interested in developing their skills in Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology. This position will join a multidisciplinary team working to develop chemical probes and bioassays for the understudied dark proteome, which will be used to validate new molecular targets for drug discovery. The candidate will perform multi-step synthesis of small molecules for test in bioassays. The candidate will develop structure-activity relationships for the target protein and design new analogs to improve potency, selectivity, and drug-like properties. All research will be conducted in an Open Science laboratory to facilitate rapid publication, presentation, and sharing of data.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
PhD in Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related field.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Qualified applicants must have experience in synthetic organic chemistry.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience in organic chemistry is preferred.
