About the Department
 

Student Counseling (SC) is a part of the Student Wellness organization within Campus and Student Life. SC provides mental health care to students and their dependents who have paid the Student Life Fee. Mental health services include: diagnostic assessments; crisis assessment and intervention; individual, couples, and/or group psychotherapy; medication management; academic skills counseling; and referral services. SC staff provides consultation to University of Chicago faculty, staff, and administrators, and outreach/education to the campus community. In its care for students, SC employs a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians, supports a psychology training program, and serves as a training rotation site for psychiatry residents.


Job Summary
 

The individual in this position will spend approximately 50% of their time on the Psychology Training Program. It is understood that particular parts of the academic year will require more than 50% time and other times of the academic year will require less than 50% time and more time completing the responsibilities as a staff psychologist. The intention is that over the course of a year, 50% of the FTE will be focused on psychology training and 50% of the FTE will be focused on the duties and responsibilities of a staff clinical psychologist.

Responsibilities

  • Directs the development and management of the psychology-training program including recruitment, application review, candidate selection, orientation, didactics, curriculum evaluation, and supervision of the postdoctoral psychology trainees and psychology externs.
  • Supervises the coordinator of Externship and other supervisors.
  • Provides direct and indirect training-related supervision to staff who are supervising trainees.
  • Reviews and revises the training manual on an annual basis.
  • Provides back-up, on-call coverage, daytime and night time/weekend as needed.
  • Serves on the counseling leadership team and contributes to overall oversight and management of Counseling services and programs.
  • Provides direct clinical services, including goal-focused, time-limited individual, couples, and group psychotherapy.
  • Provides emergency and crisis intervention services including scheduled daytime coverage and limited nighttime/weekend on-call coverage.
  • Conducts clinical diagnostic evaluation and assessment of patients.
  • Maintains timely and complete electronic documentation as appropriate.
  • Provides consultation, training, and outreach to members of the University of Chicago community both during and after hours.
  • Participates in clinical and administrative staff meetings as appropriate.
  • Provides clinical supervision of trainees as needed and as appropriate.
  • Provides breadth and depth of experience in the planning, implementation, assessment, delivery and administration of the University's Student Counseling Services.
  • Ensures the provision of multidisciplinary mental health services that reduce barriers to learning and create opportunities for greater academic achievement and student success.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Ph.D. or PsyD in counseling or clinical psychology from APA-accredited program.

Experience:

  • Five to seven years post licensure experience in provision of mental health services.
  • Administrative experience in a college counseling service.
  • Clinical supervision experience with well-developed clinical supervision skills.
  • Clear evidence of interest and experience working with a wide range of diverse students identities and needs, e.g., international, historically underrepresented or underserved student, LGBTQ identified student, and students with disabilities.
  • Experience with technology to enhance training services.

Certifications:

  • License in Professional Counseling/Clinical Psychology.

Preferred Competencies

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including strong oral, written, and listening communication capabilities.
  • Knowledge of developmental issues of university students.
  • Excellent presentation and training skills.
  • Clinical experience in a college counseling center.
  • Serve as a role model for trainees and their supervisors.
  • Well-developed organizational and tracking skills.
