Job Summary:

The Department of Mathematics is seeking a Director of the Math Learning Center (MLC). One of the largest on campus, Mathematics is home to nearly 400 workers including faculty, academic staff, university staff, pre- and postdoctoral trainees; as well as graduate and undergraduate student employees. Each year, the MLC provides support to thousands of undergraduate students taking mathematics courses through a variety of programs and services. This position offers a dynamic work environment with opportunities to oversee and organize the day-to-day operations of the MLC, supervise its permanent and temporary employees, and to continue to expand and grow the offerings of the MLC as needs arise. Duties would include:
Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Math Learning Center:
- Recruit and supervise student workers at the MLC (e.g. tutors, peer mentors, and undergraduate course assistants).
- Supervise the permanent employees of the MLC.
- Collaborate with the Mathematics TA Coordinator to staff the MLC positions held by graduate students.
- Oversee and direct current MLC activities; develop and implement new services and programs as needed to further student success in mathematics courses.
- Oversee communication and marketing efforts to advertise MLC services to students taking mathematics courses.
- Develop collaborative working relationships with campus partners to facilitate the exchange of ideas surrounding learning support.
- Oversee the MLC budget in collaboration with the department administrator; prepare and submit proposals for supplementary funding.
Serve on relevant department committees, assigned annually by the Department Chair.
Teach two undergraduate Mathematics courses per academic year (1 per semester). Teaching assignments will be on the undergraduate level, course assignment is based on the needs of the department.

Responsibilities: Provides classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction associated with more than one lecture or laboratory course, assists with the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.
  • 5% Designs curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction in courses within that discipline
  • 5% Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • 5% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and trains faculty and other instructional staff in use of said instructional techniques and programs
  • 5% Presents evaluations of teaching methods and techniques to those in the institution and elsewhere
  • 20% Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • 10% Supervises the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
  • 5% Develops grant proposals for instructional development and may serve as principal or co-principal investigator on grants to develop new teaching methods in the discipline
  • 10% May administer budget and personnel for instructional grants and programs
  • 15% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • 10% Oversee all operations of the Math Learning Center in the Department of Mathematics
  • 10% Serve as direct supervisor for at least 2.0 FTE permanent employees plus student tutors

Education:

Required
Terminal Degree
PhD in Mathematics or related field

Qualifications:

Required:
- Minimum three years teaching university level Mathematics (5 or more years preferred)
- Demonstrated knowledge of learning strategies and effective pedagogies
- Demonstrated commitment to supporting academic achievement of students
- Demonstrated organizational, planning, and coordination skills
Preferred:
- Experience in curricular development and assessment
- Experience with budget management and/or securing extramural funding
- Experience managing employees and/or student assistants

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

ANNUAL (12 months)
The starting salary for the position is $90,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and paid time off; competitive insurances and saving accounts; retirement benefits.
