Job Summary

One of our major objectives is to understand the mechanism of virus-host interaction, and the goal of the project in which this position is involved is to clarify the mechanism of HIV latency in primary CD4+ T cells.
The Staff Research Associate II (SRA II) will play an important role in supporting various experimental efforts in the lab. The SRA II will interact primarily with the PI.
We are seeking a highly motivated SRA II to participate in this exciting project. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing lentivirus. Required skills include tissue culture human cell line and produce, concentrate, and titrate lentiviruses.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Division of Rheumatology is a part of the Department of Medicine (DOM) at UCSF. The mission of the Rheumatology Division includes research, teaching and patient care. The Division has activities at multiple sites including Parnassus, Laurel Heights and Mission Bay. The Division runs several clinical practices, conducts basic and clinical research, and educates medical students, residents, clinical fellows and postdoctoral scholars. In addition, the Division has significant and complex financial and administrative relationships with DOM and the UCSF Medical Center, as well as large patient care programs, large clinical, federal, and privately supported research programs and seven faculty laboratories. The Rheumatology Division has 17 full-time faculty, nine clinical fellows, seven post-doctoral research fellows, seven WOS faculty, and 23 research and administrative staff. The Division has a sponsored research portfolio of $10+ million per year including over 40 sponsored awards, as well at the Russell Engleman Rheumatology Research Center which has an endowment principal of $30 million and generates income of $1.3 million per year in support of its clinical, research, training, and service missions. The PREMIER Center is a P30 resource-based core center funded by NIH / NIAMS. Its mission is to promote research in precision medicine across the UCSF campus through the provision of specific services, consultations, educational activities, and pilot funding.


Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Recent research experience in a virology laboratory.
  • FACS analysis.
  • Coursework experience with general cell culture techniques including maintenance of cell lines, isolation of RNA and DNA.
  • Computer skills including the use of Microsoft office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and software for data analysis (e.g. FLOJO).
  • Must be able to perform routine calculations (E.g., preparation of chemical reagents and serial dilutions).
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff and with external contacts in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a scientific research team
  • Ability to work well in a team environment with heavy workloads and tight deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experiences in producing and measuring lentiviruses (2nd and 3rd generation lentiviral vector with VSV-G pseudotyping, HIV-based vector, HIV infectious molecular clones, etc).
