Job Description

Physiology

Full Time

Job Summary

Applies advanced computational, computer science, data science, with relevant neuroscience knowledge, to develop and apply new open source software and algorithms for analyzing neural and behavioral data. The goal of this work is to better understand how the brain learns, remembers, and decides based on recordings of large numbers of single neurons and measurements of multiple behavioral variables. This position supports those efforts by contributing to shared analysis pipelines running on CPUs and/or GPUs, implementing previously developed algorithms for extracting structure from high dimensional neural and behavioral time-series, developing/applying new algorithms, developing/applying visualization tools, and working with lab members to solve complex analytical and software problems. The applicant will have full access to lab hardware and software resources, including advanced GPU and CPU workstations, multiple petabytes of local storage, and an extensive open-source software library. The applicant will also have access to an extensive database of simultaneous, multi-day long recordings from many hundreds of opf neurons across multiple brain regions. This work will also engage collaborators at the Flatiron Institute, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and other sites. Access to computing supercomputing resources at Lawrence Livermore and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories is also possible. Software is primarily written in python.

Involves a hybrid of computational and data science approaches aimed at helping us understand how the brain creates memories and uses those memories to make decisions. The laboratory carries out large-scale, multi-day recordings of neuronal activity and behavior from animals learning spatial tasks. The resulting datasets are very large and very complex. Understanding these datasets depends on the development and application of advanced software pipelines and analytical tools. Responsibilities for this position include algorithm development and application, software pipeline development, and working with lab members to analyze and visualize datasets. Code is primarily developed in python, although other languages (R, Julia, C++) may be used as needed.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.
