Summary

The Undergraduate Education Division of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is seeking to hire a part-time LEO Lecturer I to teach two sections of a course on Interdisciplinary and Intersectional LGBTQ Health, with one section taught in Spring term 2023 and another taught in Summer term 2023. This course uses interdisciplinary approaches to understand historical and contemporary disparities, with special attention to racial disparities within the LGBTQ population. 

The candidate will provide remote classroom instruction to undergraduate students in an interdisciplinary liberal arts program.

Course Description

Responsibilities include teaching two sections of ‘Interdisciplinary and Intersectional LGBTQ Health’ in spring and summer terms of 2023. This is an interdisciplinary course which explores lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) health through the social sciences, natural sciences, and the humanities to develop a more holistic understanding of health disparities and the experiences of people whose lives have been affected by them. The course should include discussions around the intersections of biology and politics, and must include awareness regarding the direct experiences of people affected by health disparities.

Students should complete the course with an understanding of how social factors such as economics, geography, race, sexual orientation, politics, laws, culture, and more all affect the nature of a disease or health condition, who is affected by it, and how it affects them. The course fulfills the College’s  Race and Ethnicity Requirement which aims to help students develop their understanding of the complexities of living and working in increasingly diverse and interconnected societies, and enhance their communication skills in such settings.

The duration of the spring appointment is May 1, 2023 - June 30, 2023.  
The duration of the summer appointment is July 1, 2023 - August 31, 2023.
The expected percentage of effort is 33.33% for each appointment.

Responsibilities*

Lecturers are expected to attend course meetings, hold office hours with students, handle routine matters related to instruction, and lead regular meetings with the graduate student instructors.

Required Qualifications*

The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise and recent university teaching experience in health science topics, particularly in the area of health disparities for the LGBTQ population. Experience working with and engaging diverse groups of undergraduate students is essential.

The candidate must hold a Master’s degree in a health science field. The candidate should have experience teaching undergraduate students on health science topics. 

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Selection Process
