Summary

The University of Michigan-Dearborn has an exciting opportunity for an experienced graduate admission evaluator and academic advisor in the College of Business.

The Graduate Admission Advisor will be responsible for providing academic advising in a variety of virtual and in-person formats to prospective and current master’s program students in the College of Business.  The Graduate Admission Advisor will also play a key role in recruiting and admitting new students to the master’s programs in the College of Business. 

The duties of this position are allocated roughly as follows:

35% - Application assessment

  • Assess all application materials and provide admit/deny recommendations for several hundred graduate applicants each year.
  • Perform the course equivalency evaluations required for admission prerequisites, waiver, exemption, and transfer credit. This includes several related activities, such as determination of course content for math admission prerequisite; liaising with faculty and department chairs to determine course equivalency for waiver, exemption, and transfer credit; tracking down publicly available course descriptions at numerous institutions, including international institutions; following up with applicants individually, as needed, to obtain detailed course descriptions; and similar duties.
  • Determine eligibility for GMAT/GRE waiver and course waivers/exemptions by performing post-60 GPA calculations and related tasks for all applicants.

35% - Academic advising and admissions counseling

  • Provide academic advising to current and prospective graduate students individually and in groups, both in-person and virtually.
  • Provide advice and guidance to students on appropriate degree program choices based on their unique academic backgrounds and career goals. 
  • Explain admission criteria, application process, and other information related to graduate admission and program planning.   
  • Develop detailed program plans for all current students, factoring in students’ individual academic backgrounds; transfer, waiver, and/or exemption credits; and individual goals.
  • Assist with virtual and in-person walk-in advising, especially during peak periods throughout the year. 
  • Handle course overrides and other registration issues, as needed throughout the year.

20% - Recruiting

  • Answer wide variety of domestic and international admission inquiries in various formats, including phone, email, and walk-ins. 
  • Conduct in-person and virtual admissions advising appointments. 
  • Assist in the planning and execution of all College of Business graduate recruiting events (currently about six per year, subject to change). 
  • Represent College of Business at additional internal and external recruiting events in consultation with Director.
  • Make presentations about admission process and program features. 
  • Speak individually with prospective students, answer admission questions, and related duties.
  • Develop and assess effectiveness of new initiatives to recruit prospective graduate students.

10% - Office processes

  • Champion and implement new technologies, processes, and other initiatives to better engage and serve current and prospective graduate students.
  • Answer office phone line and assist callers as needed.
  • Serve as Graduate Office representative on College of Business Scholarships Committee, staff committees, and other committees as needed. 
  • Work with colleagues to coordinate all applicant communications, including responding to requests for information, encouraging application completion, sending unit-level admission letters and course-planning documents, and all other communications associated with the graduate admission process.
  • Assist with monitoring and managing College of Business internal application routing process among admissions committee members and central Enrollment Management office. 
  • Assist with correcting Banner data and other frequent graduate application issues.
  • Manage supply orders as needed.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • A bachelor's degree is required.
  • At least three years of experience with a strong record of reliability and accuracy in an office or similar setting.
  • Excellent judgment: ability to apply standards fairly, accurately, and consistently over time; ability to make an informed decision while working with ambiguity.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage, and complete multiple projects, work independently, and exercise initiative and judgment within established guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage detailed, multi-step processes from start to finish. 
  • Excellent data management skills. 
  • High degree of proficiency with MS Excel, Google Sheets, and other applications. 
  • High degree of accuracy with data input.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to respond professionally to a substantial volume of inquiries in various formats in a professional and timely manner. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and interact with the public.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with graduate admission evaluation in a university setting, including experience with transcript evaluations, qualitative admission assessments, and quantitative admission assessments.
  • Experience with graduate academic advising.
  • Two or more years of experience in a university advising or admission office.
  • Knowledge of university student services.
  • Master’s degree desired.
  • Strong presentation and public-speaking skills.
  • Experience working with Salesforce, Ellucian (Banner), and WebFocus.
