The Pharmacy Services Department is seeking an experienced business professional to join the team.  This position reports to the Pharmacy Purchasing and Contracting Manager. This role is responsible for supporting and developing pharmacy purchasing and drug shortage management systems and technologies to provide informed decision-making processes for line item procurement, database management, and drug supply chain stability. This position will collaborate with the Pharmacy Analytics Team to establish analytical and technological tools to enhance the Pharmacy Buyer’s workflow and drug management workflow. This will result in additional information and guidance to proactively address drug shortages. Given the nature of this work, excellent Microsoft Office skills are required, along with a baseline understanding of other technology systems.

Responsibilities*

This position will work closely with the drug shortage pharmacist(s) to provide complete drug shortage management in both the hospital and community/specialty and mail order pharmacy settings. Specific responsibilities are listed below.

  • Investigate current market drug shortages and the impact they have on community/specialty pharmacy and hospital pharmacies
  • Analyze trends in drug utilization in hospital and community/specialty pharmacy settings (i.e., burn rates) at a national and institutional level to proactively identify drugs at risk of experiencing a shortage
  • Communicate routinely with manufacturers and wholesalers regarding drug availability
  • Compile information from various sources to create a product availability report unique to Michigan Medicine
  • Investigate shortage management solutions (e.g., SureSupply, Vizient NES) with the Pharmacy Purchasing and Contracting Manager, Senior Pharmacy Buyer, and Drug Shortage Pharmacist
  • Optimize shortage management processes, in collaboration with the Drug Shortage Pharmacist for both hospital and community/specialty pharmacy settings
  • Collaborate with the Pharmacy Analytics Team to repurpose current data streams to introduce automation and artificial intelligence into drug shortage management
  • Partner with pharmacy buyers throughout the institution to provide guidance on market availability
  • Serves as a liaison and expert resource for pharmacy drug shortage systems used by Pharmacy Services throughout the Michigan Medicine enterprise.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in a recognized field which is directly related to the duties of this position.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience analyzing and intrepreting processes, clinical outcomes, and cost of care.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects with competing priorities with organizational skills and flexibility to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbal and written to internal and external constituents and apply a high degree of analytical, interpretive, and evaluative skills dealing with complex concepts, projects, etc.
  • Self-motivated with an ability to work well with teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead team members to accomplish a common goal.
  • Experienced use with standard office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc).
  • Possess or be able to obtain a Pharmacy Technician license with the State of Michigan

Desired Qualifications*

  • Advanced degree in Analytics, Public Health, Health Administration, Business, Engineering, Pharmacy, or Data Science.
  • Depth of experience and proven track record implementing and support pharmacy purchasing or drug shortage systems within healthcare organizations.
  • Experience leading a highly productive team to accomplish a common goal.
  • Experience and credibility interacting with all levels of leadership.

Work Schedule

Hybrid work position between in office and remote

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
