The AFC and its myriad programs provide academic opportunities, resources, leadership development and other support initiatives for first generation-low income college bound scholars to achieve success through education. As the first Rutgers-Newark special program established to identify talent beyond traditional measures and then recruit, retain and graduate talented young people from the greater Newark area, AFC remains a jewel in the crown of Rutgers- Newark, serving nearly 1500 undergraduate students annually.
Posting Summary
Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Senior EOF Counselor. Reporting to the Assistant Dean/ Associate Director of Counseling Services in the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program at Rutgers University-Newark, the position’s responsibilities include and are not limited to the following.
  • Assists the programmatic development and implementation of the EOF Program, and assures successful levels of academic achievement and graduation for an assigned caseload of Rutgers University – Newark undergraduate students;
  • Provides orientation to the campus culture as well as academic, career, financial aid, and personal counseling;
  • Serves as a liaison and maintains contact with faculty, school academic advisors, residence life, student life, financial aid, student accounting, registrar’s office, admissions office, the Learning Resource and Writing Centers, and other internal and external special programs;
  • Develops, initiates, and administers special projects and services for the summer program’s academic component and specified EOF populations to promote leadership, holistic growth, and achievement;
  • Conducts outreach on behalf of EOF students with outside community constituents, agencies, and schools;
  • Teaches a credit-bearing during the summer bridge program and during the academic year that focuses on strategies for academic success.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Masters degree, preferably in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or related field
  • Two years experience with students from disadvantaged backgrounds

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Requires expert knowledge of non-traditional college students coupled with the ability to implement academic support and affective support to the same;
  • Experience in these areas as well as developing and conducting academic support workshops coupled with strong writing, analytical and presentation skills are also required;
  • Requires experience in and/or willingness to work with diverse cultures and backgrounds;
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Must also be able to assess the program participants in terms of the areas prescribed by the EOF program.

Immunization Requirements


Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.
