Job Summary
Critical Disability Studies Postdoctoral Fellow
Disability Studies Program
University of Utah
The University of Utah’s Disability Studies program seeks applicants for a two-year postdoctoral research/teaching position in the School for Cultural and Social Transformation (Transform), with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023. Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. by the time of their appointment.
The Disability Studies postdoctoral fellow will be working at the intersections of race/ethnicity and disability, engaged in the ongoing work of challenging the historic whiteness and colonialism of Disability Studies as a field. The successful candidate will contribute to the growth of our Disability Studies minor by teaching one course per semester: one section of DISAB 3000 “Introduction to Disability Studies” and one section of DISAB 5880 “Bad Bodies: Disability and Gender.” The Disability Studies fellow will also pursue their own research, conduct a presentation of their work, participate in and help facilitate selected Disability Studies or Transform events, and engage in scholarly exchange at and beyond the University of Utah.
Disability Studies at the University of Utah is a small but vital and growing program housed in the School for Cultural and Social Transformation—a freestanding college for intersectional inquiry—alongside the Division of Ethnic Studies, the Division of Gender Studies, and the Pacific Island Studies initiative. It oversees a burgeoning undergraduate Disability Studies minor that serves about 50 students per year, drawn from colleges such as Engineering, Health, Humanities, Nursing, Social and Behavioral Science, and Transform. The program offers two core courses and at least one elective each year. These courses attract not only Disability Studies minors but also a diverse group of motivated undergraduate and graduate students.
The Disability Studies program also fosters interdisciplinary faculty conversations with reading groups, research presentations, and the Disability Studies lecture and seminar, and it has been actively involved in creating change around disability and access issues at the University of Utah. The successful applicant will be welcomed into Transform’s community, the recent recipient of two substantial Mellon grants: one building a national network for Intersectional Studies, the other for creating a new Center for Pasifika and Indigenous Knowledges. The Disability Studies program is actively involved in the grant for Intersectional Studies.
The salary will be $60,000 per year plus access to health benefits, with $2000 per year for research/travel.
Qualifications
Scholars with a Ph.D. in the Humanities, Social Sciences, or interdisciplinary fields such as Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies, or Disability Studies will be considered. The dissertation must be signed by June 30, 2023. Candidates must be untenured and within five years of their Ph.D.

University of Utah
The University of Utah is the flagship institution of the Utah System of Higher Education and has been classified by the Carnegie Foundation as among those research universities with the “highest research activity.” The University’s centers, including the Black Cultural Center, American Indian Resource Center, the Center for Student Equity & Student Belonging, collectively support and advocate for staff, students, and faculty who connect with Black, Native, Indigenous, and communities of color experiences through research, culturally affirming education initiatives, and service. As a result of recent student activism and work by the Universal Design and Access Committee, the University also has two new student disability groups and a developing group for disabled students, faculty, and staff.

The University is located in Salt Lake City, the center of a metropolitan area with a population of approximately 1.25 million residents. Salt Lake City is home to sizable Latinx and immigrant populations (21.5% and 11.5% of residents, respectively) and has the highest number per capita of Pacific Islanders in the continental United States. Salt Lake City has the 11th largest LGBTQ population in the U.S. The city’s proximity to the Wasatch Mountains, world-class ski resorts, and national parks makes it an ideal location for outdoor recreation. The Salt Lake City International Airport is a major hub with direct flights to most U.S. cities and direct international flights to many major cities. SLC has extensive arts and cultural activities. The area has received international recognition for its new light rail system, foodie culture, Sundance Film Festival, downtown renewal, and increasing diversity. In 2017, U.S News and World report ranked Salt Lake City as the 10th best place to live in the nation.
