Department Summary

The University of Michigan (U-M) University Health Service (UHS), a unit of Student Life (SL), is an AAAHC-accredited outpatient multispecialty health clinic that serves a large and diverse student body of more than 45,000 students, as well as U-M faculty and staff. UHS provides direct patient care through its primary care and specialty clinics, and contributes to public health, epidemiologic surveillance, health education and promotion on campus. UHS reports administratively to the AVP of Student Life for Health and Wellness, uses the same instance of Epic (MiChart) as Michigan Medicine, and closely collaborates with Michigan Medicine and public health agencies.

UHS provides clinical services throughout its primary care and specialty clinics, as well as health and wellness education and promotion. Specialty clinics include: Allergy, Dermatology, Eating & Body Image Concerns, Eye Care, Gynecology & Sexual Health, Nutrition, Physical Therapy, Psychiatry, Sleep, Social Work, Sports Medicine, and Travel Health.  The Sports Medicine Clinic is staffed by primary care sports medicine physicians, physical therapists and now ATCs.

Job Summary

The Head Athletic Trainer will work directly with University Health Services (UHS), Adaptive Sports & Fitness (ASF) and Club Sports (Rec Sports) administration, coaches, physicians, mental health clinicians, dieticians, strength and conditioning personnel, and other allied health personnel to deliver comprehensive healthcare and lifetime wellness services for the University of Michigan adaptive and club sport student-athletes. The Head Athletic Trainer will have a wide-range of clinical and administrative daily responsibilities to include the prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of adaptive and club sport student-athletes; pre-participation physicals; inventory management of supplies and equipment; maintaining medical records; daily interaction, communication, and relationship building with coaching staff, strength and conditioning and sports performance personnel, physicians, other members of the medical community, and athletic administration; attending team practices and events; supervising other athletic trainers; assisting with various administrative duties; and performing other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities*

Athletic Training Services (70%)

  • Serve as the Head Athletic Trainer and primary medical contact for both Adaptive Sports & Fitness and Club Sports
  • Serve as the primary medical contact and liaison between members of the coaching staff, student-athletes, community member athletes, lead physical therapist, parents, physicians, other allied health personnel, sport administration, and others for the Adaptive Sports & Fitness program
  • Clinical application and administration of comprehensive health care and lifetime wellness services for student-athletes as assigned to include the prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses under the guidance of physician orders in coordination with the physical therapist
  • Attend assigned team practices, competitions, strength and conditioning sessions, and other team events as needed and/or directed
  • Maintain a safe environment for student-athletes and community members to return to practice or competition following an injury and/or illness and communicate participation status with the appropriate personnel
  • Coordination of medical coverage for Adaptive Sports & Fitness events; including competitions, recreational events, practices, and drop-in programming
  • Assist with substance abuse testing as directed
  • Represent the University of Michigan and Adaptive Sports & Fitness at University, State, Regional, and national conferences and/or meetings as assigned and participate in special projects, committees, or other initiatives as assigned

Administrative (20%)

  • Medical documentation and record keeping for athletes in Adaptive Sports & Fitness
  • Maintain the organization, administration, inventory, and staffing of athletic training workspaces; including the UHS office and ASF training locations
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures as defined by the University of Michigan, University Health Services, United States Tennis Association, National Wheelchair Basketball Association, USA Track and Field, and other relevant entities
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for Athletic Training at University Health Services
  • Adhere to the Code of Ethics and credentialing requirements of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) and the State of Michigan Bureau of Health Care Services
  • Act as liaison with other members of Adaptive Sports & Fitness in issues involving student-athletes, including compliance, academics, athletic counseling, nutrition, strength and conditioning, and others
  • Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities (10%)

  • Hire, train, supervise and manage performance of Athletic Trainers

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training or a related field
  • Eligible for Athletic Training licensure by the State of Michigan Bureau of Health Care Services
  • SafeSport compliant
  • Certified Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC)
  • Ability to meet Continuing Education requirements as established by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification and the State of Michigan
  • CPR/First Aid certified

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s Degree in Athletic Training or a related field
  • Three (3) years related experience in Adaptive Sports (athletes with physical disabilities)
  • Five (5) years related experience in intercollegiate or competitive sport;
  • Athletic Training Student preceptor experience
  • Working knowledge of electronic medical record system
  • CPR/First Aid Instructor
  • Ability to champion a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, life-long learning and continuous improvement
  • Familiarity with Adaptive Sports specific injuries
  • Familiarity with manual therapy techniques

  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions

Working conditions

Shift/Hours: Variable, primarily daytime hours but occasional evening and weekends expected for games, travel, practice coverage and cross-coverage. Ability to work long hours, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, non-traditional work hours, extended periods of time without days off, travel, and be on-call as a regular part of the position. Potential to provide care via telehealth services as appropriate. Reasonable accommodations will be provided as necessary.

Physical requirements

Able to maintain a stationary position for extended periods of time and move and transport students and/or objects weighing 25 pounds or more with reasonable accommodations.

Direct reports

Supervision two (2) Athletic Trainers.

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

Posting salary range: $54,100 - $64,900 - Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of selected candidate.
