Job Description

The Research Assistant position will support externally-funded research led by faculty in the Keough School of Global Affairs. The position will be responsible for supporting multiple projects, each in different phases of the reserach life cycle, in parallel. These projects include information technologies and research infrastruture design, literature review, data collection, data analysis and synthesis, documentation, and dissemination (written and visual). The position will be expected to engage research teams and other stakeholders at multiple universities in each of these projects. The projects are mixed methods in nature and require quantitative and qualitative research skill-sets.

Data synthesis, dissemination and reporting for joint US-Workshop on data needs, fulfilling duties of conference secretariat responsible for correspondence with contributors, generation of workshop products, maintenance of conference website/social media, and reporting/project close out duties.

Design and implement an enhanced functionality website in support of the StEER network, including development of backing databases and guidance for long-term maintenance; assist in preparation of post-disaster datasets for long-term curation in DesignSafe.

Assemble datasets documenting cases of joint pandemic hazards, adaptations, and transitions in infrastructure system and services due to the COVID-19 pandemic; conduct analyses of these and other databases; assist with online focus groups and thematic analysis of transcripts.

Support National Academies Study on impacts of disasters on marginalized communities, conducting desk research, conducting basic statistical or geospatial analyses of third party data, and executing thematic analyses of transcripts from focus groups.

Support World Bank project on self-recovery following the 2021 Haiti Earthquake, preparing mobile applications for data collection, conducting desk research, conducting basic statistical or geospatial analyses of third party data, and executing thematic analyses of transcripts from focus groups and key informant interviews.

This is 1 year limited term position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (4 years) required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact professionally among colleagues from culturally diverse backgrounds and in different project settings.
  • Experience conducting desk reviews, geospatial analysis, thematic analyses of transcripts, and basic quantitative analyses from large databases, with ability to effectively communicate conclusions/synthesize findings.
  • Strong oral, written and visual communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in web development, including database design and interactive web-modules and mobile application development.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing multiple tasks simultaneously across projects with collaborators across different institutions with a high attention to detail and operational excellence.
  • Well-versed in cloud collaboration tools such as Google Suite, Slack, and Zoom. Graphic design experience welcomed, but not required.
