Southside Virginia Community College, a comprehensive community college, is seeking a dual-credentialed instructor with master’s level coursework in Psychology and Sociology. The successful candidate must be committed to our mission to provide quality education to a diverse constituency.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:
Teaching and student advising, including maintaining 10 hours of scheduled office time per week. Classes taught may be a combination of day, night and/or weekends and a combination of seated, online, or hybrid. Classes may be located on or off campus, possibly in local high schools, or in a correctional center for a total of 15 credit hours per semester across locations served by the college. Other duties include serving on committees, participating in professional activities, mentoring adjunct instructors, and may include program development and assessment.

 

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in psychology or Master’s degree in sociology with 18 graduate semester hours in teaching field (If degree in one discipline, prefer an additional 18 graduate credits in opposite to allow flexibility.)
  • Ability to teach a combination of psychology and sociology courses
  • Willingness to teach in off-campus centers, high schools and correctional facilities
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in online and face-to-face modalities
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and time management skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • An understanding of the community college environment and mission
  • Ability to work effectively with a culturally and educationally diverse student population
  • Understanding of current best practices in pedagogy
  • Competency in and dedication to the use of instructional technologies

 

Preferred Qualifications
  • Coursework in other related fields, such as human services or administration of justice
  • Community college/college teaching experience
  • Online teaching experience
