Job Description:

Title: Assistant Director of Lifelong Learning and Workforce Development

Unit: Non-Unit Professional (NUP)

Department: Institutional Advancement - Community Education

Reports to: Dean of Workforce Development and Innovation

Date: January 30, 2023

General Summary of Responsibilities:

Under the general supervision of the Dean of Workforce Development and Innovation, the Assistant Director is responsible for the development, advancement, and management of youth, teens, personal enrichment, and career open enrollment courses. This highly professional and innovative individual manages the development, implementation, and evaluation of revenue-generating community education and training courses for youth and adults. The Assistant Director leads the College for Kids/Teens/Parents program. The position requires an ability to facilitate productive and ongoing relationships between the College and customers and to identify resources needed to respond to customer needs. The Assistant Director will collaborate with academic deans, department chairs, and others to create collegial relationships between non-credit and credit to allow for pathways to credit.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Program Management

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate age-appropriate courses for youth, including College for Kids summer program (after-school programming, and vacation programs), College for Teens, and College for Parents.
  • Manage the College for Kids summer program, from hiring through course development and the running of programs.
  • Manage noncredit courses for adults annually including personal enrichment and workforce development courses.
  • Provide high-quality customer service to existing and prospective students.
  • Work with vendors and MCC's Business Office on the development and approval of vendor contracts.
  • Develop and schedule all noncredit courses and programs for promotion in accordance with the three noncredit catalog production schedules.
  • Assist the Dean and Director in managing programs in healthcare and information technology, such as the Local Anesthesia program, Dental webinars, and Google IT/Comp TIA A+ programs.
  • Facilitate the smooth running of all noncredit courses and career training in cooperation with other MCC departments.
  • Manage workforce development-oriented grant courses as needed.
  • Work with administrative support staff to order texts and materials for scheduled courses and workshops.
  • Recruit, hire, orient, supervise, support, and evaluate noncredit instructors for all programs.
  • Support faculty in all aspects of implementation, including disciplinary incidents, scheduling conflicts, ordering materials, course evaluations, and coordination of photocopied materials. Also coordinates the use of WebEx and Zoom.
  • Responsible for working with instructors on the redesign of non-credit courses to online and hybrid learning models.

Sales & Marketing

  • Determine appropriate recruitment and marketing strategies for youth, teens, and adult programming.
  • Market courses, workshops, and programs through fliers, constant contact software, social media, LinkedIn, attending chamber expositions, events and networking, Training Pro, and the Mass Hire system.
  • Collaborate with Marketing Department to develop marketing materials.
  • Support individual revenue and department goals in coordination with the Dean of Workforce Development and Innovation.
  • Network with vocational schools in the area to cross-market programs.
  • Responsible for the talent acquisition of non-credit faculty members including the recruitment of technical and non-technical faculty through a variety of sources in conjunction with the Human Resources department.
  • Attend community networking events to promote Corporate and Community Education and Training.

Internal and External Collaboration

  • Serve on a college-wide committee and participate in community activities.
  • Attend external events as a representative of Middlesex Community College and promote noncredit programs.
  • Collaborate with credit and non-credit faculty and vendors to research ideas for College for Kids programs and high-demand areas of training. Design curriculum, implement, and evaluate new courses and workshops.
  • Collaborate with the academic deans to generate and research new program ideas.
  • Attend and participate in the Workforce Development Council and the Massachusetts Association of Business and Industry Director (MACCBID) monthly meetings.
  • Promote and maintain responsive community relations including working with Chambers of Commerce, and trade associations.
  • Collaborate with the MassHire Career Centers to assist applicants applying for training.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Recruits and manages staff for the College for Kids program
  • Oversees administrative assistants in carrying out duties associated with their programs. Supervises program faculty. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Middlesex Community College's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Assists with the training of replacement IA support (admin) staff.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Update the MCC Community Education and Training website to include information on newly developed programs.
  • Develop work plans, and goals, and monitor program progress.
  • Monitor expenditures in accordance with established budgets.
  • Advise Community Education and Training students.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Business, or a closely related field
  • Experience working with or developing programming for youth after-school or enrichment programs
  • Exposure to managing educational or workforce development programs for adults.
  • Experience marketing and selling educational or other services.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to effectively coordinate activities with other college departments.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written, verbal, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task.
  • Experience with equity-minded work and/or understanding of individuals of diverse identities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, veterans, and individuals with different academic preparation levels and varying physical and learning abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in developing contracts with outside vendors.
  • Exposure to managing noncredit programs in healthcare and/or information technology.
  • At least three years of experience in a Community Education environment.

Location: Bedford campus with occasional travel to Lowell as needed

Hours: 37.5 per week, schedule to be determined upon hire, this position will be eligible for a maximum of two days of telework in accordance with the College's telework policy.
