Position Summary

 

Organizes and implements the Humanities/Social Sciences Division to provide learning opportunities for students within the disciplines of humanities and social sciences such as art, anthropology, communications, criminal justice, history, humanities, journalism, English, music, philosophy, political science, sociology, speech, theater and world languages, as well as, the College Writing Center, Honors Program, The AGORA student newspaper, First-year Experience, and the MCCC Symphony Band and AGORA chorale by performing the following duties.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Plans, organizes, and administers divisional activities including division meetings, recruitment efforts, division initiatives, and task forces. 
  • Develops the schedule of classes for the division each semester and assigns faculty according to qualifications. 
  • Keeps informed of new developments and maintains a creative and experimental attitude toward change, in order to improve continuously the operation of the division. 
  • Interviews, recommends, assigns, and evaluates full-time and adjunct faculty. 
  • Provides Vice President of Instruction (VPI) with current course outcome summaries for all humanities and social sciences courses and current curriculum guides for all division programming. Facilitates accurate submission of curriculum documents to the Curriculum Committee and VPI. Facilitates an accurate accounting of course outlines, class syllabi, and instructional materials per course and program. 
  • Recommends new and revised program areas to maintain credibility and relevancy of humanities and social science courses and programs to ensure division offerings meet the needs of students, employers, and the community. 
  • Ensures division course and program offerings are accurately reflected in the college catalog, division and program webpages, and division publications. 
  • Monitors adequacy of instructional equipment, computer hardware and instructional software, and related supplies to ensure the division remains current with advancing technology, making recommendations to the VPI for additions or replacement as appropriate. 
  • Coordinates activities of advisory committees. 
  • Maintains liaison between area high schools and four-year college counterparts and leads in the establishment of articulation and transfer agreements.
  • Investigates student complaints and reports potential issues to the appropriate supervisor/VP/College office in a timely manner. Holds students accountable to the College’s Code of Conduct and course/program policies. Facilitates disciplines according to policy. Handles and forwards student appeals according to published procedures. 
  • Establishes and maintains a climate that encourages the professional development of its members, the retention of qualified and competent faculty and staff, and a high level of morale, collaboration, and cooperation within the division. 
  • Coordinates activities with other administrators to accomplish the mission, vision, and values of the College. 
  • Maintains effective relations with faculty and students. 
  • Participates in activities of Campus committees and task forces. 
  • Remains current in all rules, requirements, and standards of institutional (e.g. Higher Learning Commission) and program accreditation agencies. Ensures compliance with accreditation standards, as applicable to programming within the division. Cooperates with College offices to provide institutional reports and prepare requests for information related to division activities from the HLC and other institutional accreditation/licensing organizations. 
  • Prepares a comprehensive division budget with input from appropriate resources for consideration by the VPI. Authorizes expenditures within the confines of the approved budget, keeping the VPI well informed of any variances. Works with division faculty, staff, grant coordinators, and the VPI to secure and/or allocate appropriate funding for unexpected expenditures. 
  • Coordinates activities with various internal and external stakeholders to accomplish the mission and vision of the College. 
  • Teaches on a limited bases, as assigned and as schedule permits. 
  • Oversees the College Writing Across the Curriculum program and Writing Center, Honors program, First Year Experience curriculum, student newspaper, symphony band, choir, drama/theatre productions, and literary/arts publications. 
  • Other duties utilizing similar skills and abilities, related to the accomplishment of the essential functions of this job, may be assigned.

 

 

 

Education and Experience

Master's degree in a discipline or field within the division, or related field; 5 years related teaching and administrative experience; OR equivalent combination of education and experience. Ph.D. in related discipline is preferred.

 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities 

Supervises staff, administrators, professional staff, and full-time and adjunct faculty within the Humanities/Social Sciences area. Executes supervisory responsibilities in accordance with applicable laws and the organization's policies, which includes the Code of Ethics. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

 

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts by addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Ability to apply concepts of fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, and basic algebra and geometry to practical situations. Ability to conceptualize fundamentals of probability and statistical inference.

 

Reasoning Ability 

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Computer Skills 

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
