Job Description Summary
The Counseling Department is seeking a Full-Time Tenure -Track Counselor/Articulation Officer to provide comprehensive services to students to increase their sense of belonging, self-efficacy, and awareness of opportunities to help students achieve their academic and personal goals. The role and function of the CA Community College (CCC) Counselor/Articulation Officer is critical to Cuesta's ability to offer relevant and appropriate transfer level major preparation and general education courses, and to develop associate degree programs that align with the lower division requirements for majors offered by the UC and the CSU.

COUNSELOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide innovative approaches and engage in the recruitment, orientation, registration, and retention of students, informing them of Cuesta College's degree, certificate, vocational, and transfer opportunities;
 
Provide students with culturally competent academic and personal counseling that will stimulate them to grow in the understanding of self and others, preparing them to become engaged citizens;
 
Assist with tracking, scheduling and follow-up of required student contacts, including but not limited to maintaining documentation of counseling-related activities;
 
Support students to identify and clarify their educational goals and provide guided exploration and pathway maps to those goals;
Utilize degree audit system, other appropriate technology, and websites when counseling students and developing Student Education Plans (SEP);
 
Provide referrals to academic and student support services;
 
Provide follow-up and support to students with unsatisfactory academic progress;
 
Participate in accreditation, program review, and processes for institutional planning, including but not limited to the support of Counseling department
 
Student Service Outcomes (SSO) development and assessment;
 
Continually improve counseling skills, maintain currency with transfer articulation agreements, transfer policies, and technology tools;
 
Establish and maintain a schedule of regular counseling opportunities for students (i.e.: individual, group, hybrid, and on-line);
 
Demonstrate proficiency and assist students with on-line counseling resources;
 
Develop working relationships with and communicate information to counseling personnel, academic departments, local area high schools, the community;
 
Assume the responsibility as a faculty member for accomplishing the goals of Cuesta College;
 
Be cognizant of the mission, goals, and objectives of Cuesta College, using them as broad guidelines in counseling and assisting students;
 
Adhere to the regularly established work week as established by the administration. Assignments may be day, evening, weekend or online at the San Luis Obispo Campus, North County Campus in Paso Robles, or other sites within San Luis Obispo County.
 
 
ARTICULATION OFFICER RESPONSIBLITIES
Assist with Curriculum and Articulation Management;
 
Lead Cuesta College's Statewide Articulation Initiatives;
 
Lead and collaborate with campus-wide departments and partnerships related to Articulation matters pertaining to Cuesta College Transfer Center;
 
Participate in Cuesta College Curriculum Committee;
 
Develop and Maintain of Cuesta College CSU GE, IGETC, Cuesta GE, AP, IB, CLEP (external exams), patterns for Catalog/Pathways/Program Mapper; and
 
Lead advisor to other Counselors and to the Evaluations Unit, pertaining to questions about the "pass along" of courses and external exam into 3 GE, ADT's, and for local degree and certificate local requirements. The Ideal Candidate:

Selected applicants will be asked to interview via Zoom for a full-time tenure track position as a Counselor in the Student Success and Support Programs
 
Division on either. Second interviews will be held via Zoom on. The selected applicant will begin their full-time counselor/articulation officer assignment in the 2023-2024 school year which begins July 1, 2023.

Essential Functions & Qualifications

Required:
  • Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, from an accredited institution;
OR

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees from an accredited institution; AND
  • A license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT);
OR

  • The equivalent. (Candidates applying on the basis of equivalency must submit all materials requested for an equivalency judgment. For directions on what is an acceptable equivalency argument please review the requirements listed on the HR Website .)
OR

  • A valid Community College credential in the discipline (If received prior to 1990, as the credential is no longer being issued).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Subject Matter Preparation

Preference will be given to candidates who:
Have recent successful experience counseling at the California Community College level;
Experience counseling underrepresented community college students during the last four years;
Well qualified to counsel a diverse student population;
Professional work experience in the field of counseling, including excellence in written an oral communication;
Strong preparation in evaluation of transcripts, research and articulation;
Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students;
Understanding and working knowledge of the policies and regulations of the California Community College Articulation Officer.
Evidence of Outstanding Ability as a Counselor
Appropriate evidence includes, but is not limited to experience, training or achievement that the candidate has:
Commitment to staying up-to-date with the latest developments in counseling and in collaborating with community organizations and/or professional organizations and partnership development;
The ability to continuously evaluate and improve counseling methods;
The ability to use counseling methods that engage students actively in their own learning, promote of critical thinking skills, and encourage them to become lifelong learners;
The ability to use counseling methods that emphasize cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity;
The ability to motivate students from a broad spectrum of cultural, academic, socioeconomic and language backgrounds;
Familiarity with and willingness to expand the use of technology in counseling, including online counseling;
Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, the mission and objectives of the California Community Colleges;
Evidence of commitment to, and active participation in, professional development in the field of counseling.
Evidence of Outstanding Ability as Articulation Officer
Serve as a proactive agent for enhancing and improving existing articulation, initiate faculty-approved articulation agreements between institutions of higher education.
Serve as an advocate for the faculty and campus academic programs.
Serve as an advocate for the other articulating institution. Responsible for accurately communicating and conveying information and concerns about the institution's curriculum to the faculty. Evidence of Effectiveness as a Colleague
The ability, initiative and commitment to work collaboratively with faculty and staff in the spirit of collegiality and innovation to enhance counseling and promote student success and completion;
Commitment to professional responsibilities outside of counseling sessions through enthusiastic contributions to the department, division and college activities.
Desirable Qualifications
Recent experience working with racially minoritized and other disproportionately-impacted students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education and particular fields shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
Willingness to examine and remediate one's counseling practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students;
Experience and skill with addressing inequity in the division and on campus;
Experience and expertise in culturally-responsive counseling;
Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps;
Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for institutional, departmental and instructional practices;
Knowledge of counseling and guidance principles, techniques and procedures; academic requirements for community college and transfer to four-year institutions; community college onboarding processes, job market, career trends and requirements, electronic data entry and record keeping practices;
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals and in making presentations to groups;
Ability to work with and assist students having a great range of skills, motivation, and educational goals; review and evaluate counseling needs and formulate recommendations as appropriate; work with underrepresented students.
Demonstrate working knowledge and experience in policies and regulations of the California Community College Articulation Officer.
