Description of Work Unit
The Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University is a large academic and research department in the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering. We currently have twenty-three faculty members, ninety graduate students, over seventy full-time researchers and postdoctoral fellows, and an outstanding and dedicated support staff, that comprise one of the most research-active units at the university. The department conducts more than $14M in externally sponsored research each year and is nationally ranked near the top of its field. Within the Department of Atmospheric Science, the Fischer Group leads several interdisciplinary research programs related to air quality, public communication, and mentoring early career scientists.
The Fischer research group focuses on improving our understanding of global atmospheric composition through the use of in situ measurements, satellite observations and global models. The group also leads a number of initiatives focused on inclusivity in the STEM workforce.
Position Summary
This coordinator position within the Department of Atmospheric Science reports to Dr. Emily Fischer. This coordinator position supports three different federally funded research projects through call and email campaigns, task management, and other areas as needed. The coordinator position partners with research team members to understand the overall strategy, outreach, and recruitment of study participants. Specifically, this position communicates with community members related to air quality information and mentoring. This position communicates via email and conducts interviews and focus groups with English- and Spanish-speaking communities. The position is necessary for relationship building at events and meetings in northern Colorado, and occasionally they travel nationally. The position is responsible for translating questionnaires, emails, and other communication materials that facilitate communication for project opportunities and research activities from English into Spanish. This position interprets at events and meetings among CSU team and community members as needed, and the position assists with planning workshops and events. This coordinator position is IRB trained. Other duties of this position involve working with communities to scale-up air quality and mentoring initiatives.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Completed bachelor’s degree
  • Spanish language written and oral fluency
  • Experience communicating in a professional environment with students and community stakeholders through email and over the phone
  • Demonstrated experience exhibiting strong organizational and record keeping skills and attention to detail
  • Experience managing multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date
  • Experience facilitating connections and/or establishing relationships with members of diverse populations
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of multidisciplinary teams and on multiple overlapping projects
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the US by the position start date; the department will not sponsor a visa for this position. 
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Experience analyzing interview and focus group data and reporting on these results
  • Ability to guide Spanish translation, interpretation, and communication with cultural nuance
  • Prior development of communication materials (including website development/upkeep)
  • Experience facilitating small-group communication
  • Experience with outreach through various channels
  • Understanding of environmental justice and how it manifests in the earth sciences
  • Understanding of evidence-based mentoring practices

  • Maintain up to date contact information and document all interaction history for all project participants.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for project communications; serve as a community contact and provide ongoing program support.
  • Ensure that recruitment tasks, emails, voicemails, and applicants are responded to in a timely manner across the team.
