Position Summary

Denver FIRST seeks a research faculty member to work on or serve as Principal Investigator on a number of externally-funded projects. This is a full-time, benefited, twelve-month faculty position. The Research Professorial Series does not necessarily imply a remunerative relationship with the University. Candidates for this role are expected to be fully funded from external sources. Appointments are subject to the availability of external funding and may terminate due to the lack of external funding. The generation of adequate research funds is the responsibility of this faculty member.

This research faculty position will join a highly interactive, supportive, and interdisciplinary group of faculty and students in the Master’s of Forensic Psychology (MAFP) program. The primary duties of this position will involve managing and leading externally-funded projects as part of GSPP’s applied clinical research enterprise as well as engaging with scholarly activity related to these projects. Departmental expectations unrelated to these projects can be negotiated and compensated accordingly. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion through their research and service.

This position reports to the Denver FIRST Clinic Director. The research faculty member will supervise employees tied to grant projects. This individual will be responsible for the daily management, supervision, training, and evaluation of personnel (such as graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and professional research staff) whose positions are funded by research grants on which s/he/they is the principal investigator.

Denver FIRST’s current externally-funded projects include the Outpatient Competency Restoration Program (OCRP), which serves as the region’s only university-based outpatient competency restoration program and has successfully renewed its contract with the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) for its third year.

Denver FIRST was also just awarded funding from the Fines Committee to expand its programming to serve persons with brain injuries in the competency system in Colorado. That expansion is a 24-month pilot project designed to identify and assess defendants with brain injuries (traumatic and acquired; TBI and ABI) ordered to outpatient competency restoration programs, as well as enhance TBI-informed interventions for those identified defendants.

The Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP) has also recently launched the Denver FIRST Juvenile Justice Project. The Denver FIRST Juvenile Justice Project aims to provide gender-sensitive and culturally competent evidence-based intervention and prevention services to juvenile justice-involved girls in the Denver metro area. This project is funded by the Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) federal grant through September 2023.

While these projects may change over time, currently this position will serve as Principal Investigator on the Denver FIRST Outpatient Competency Restoration Program and the Fines Committee Brain-Injury grant.
As Principal Investigator, this position will be responsible for providing administrative and clinical oversight of all aspects of these projects, including overall project management, providing clinical supervision to graduate clinicians providing evaluation and consultative services through the Denver FIRST, overseeing program evaluation, hiring and supervising relevant personnel, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and and policies. The Research Faculty member will also oversee grant expenditures and renewals and proposals to secure funding for the continuation of this position and related programming.

In addition, the Research Assistant Faculty will have the opportunity to lead a collaboration with the Juvenile Justice Project operating under Denver FIRST. Contributions to this project may include but are not limited to, the development of programmatic structure and processes, provision of supervision to graduate clinicians, and establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with community partners and relevant stakeholders.

Appointment, tenure, and promotion for this role will be governed by the University of Denver’s Policies and Procedures Relating to Faculty Appointment, Promotion & Tenure. This is an assistant professor rank position.
