Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland Alumni Association is seeking a dynamic, organized and customer service oriented event professional to join our team. The Associate Program Director, Alumni Events reports directly to the Senior Director of Alumni Engagement and Outreach. They are responsible for the planning and execution of alumni events. Working closely with the Senior Director of Alumni Engagement and Outreach, the Program Director of Alumni Events and Programs will create strategic high impact and mass engagement events to engage alumni and inspire further involvement with the university. These programs provide alumni the ability to reconnect, foster new relationships, network and build new traditions. The Associate Program Director will develop digital content including video and non-event engagement collateral.

The Associate Program Director will provide a high level of customer service to establish effective communication channels, and act as a liaison with internal and external constituents. This individual must have strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse campus community while navigating a large, complex organizational structure. They will work with a vast array of constituents including, Board of Governors, leadership volunteers, senior leadership, the president, vice presidents, deans, and development colleagues.

The Associate Program Director must be highly skilled in organizing resources and establishing priorities, and have the ability to develop, plan, and implement short and long-range goals. Additionally, they must possess the ability to make procedural decisions and judgments, perform complex tasks, maintain confidentiality, and to prioritize multiple projects. A successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.

This position requires availability to work evenings and/or weekends as necessary. Some travel (plane, train, other) required up to 30%.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience:
A minimum of 5 years of experience working in alumni relations, event management, or a related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups, manage concurrent priorities, think strategically, and set and achieve both long- and short-term goals in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage programs, events, and marketing to increase participation.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, writing, and oral communication skills.
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive.

Other:
A driver’s license valid in the State of Maryland with fewer than six (6) points and access to a vehicle are required for this position.

  • Prior experience with a higher education institution and/or an understanding and appreciation of its values and the ability to articulate it to internal and external constituencies.
  • Strong experience and understanding of program budgeting and strategic planning.

Physical Demands

This position requires some heavy lifting during events (up to 30lbs), and the ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary. A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are required for this position. Additionally, local and national travel is required up to 30% of the time. Some work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard equipment and keyboards.
