DESCRIPTION
:

Edmonds College is seeking a mission driven Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences to provide leadership, management, planning, oversight and advocacy for faculty, staff, and programs with a goal of providing an equitable and inclusive environment for student success within the Humanities and Social Sciences Divisions. The departments currently within the Humanities and Social Sciences Divisions include the following: Anthropology, Art, Career and College Success, Communication Studies, Diversity Studies, Drama, English, Geography, History, Humanities, Journalism, Modern Languages, Music, Philosophy, Photography, Political Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, Visual Communications.

As a member of the Instructional Leadership team, the Dean reports to the Vice President of Instruction and has first-line responsibilities for all employees within the division. In addition to operational responsibilities, selected special project responsibilities are assigned as needed.

The Dean also works closely with Workforce Development and Training. Activities may include attending quarterly meetings, working on committees of the state’s Articulation and Transfer Council and working with the Vice President to ensure that selected faculty are in compliance with professional/technical certification.

 


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assume primary responsibility for the recruitment, screening, orientation and continued professional development of full-time and part-time faculty and staff within the division.
  • Manage tenure processes for probationary faculty in the instructional division.
  • Conduct evaluations of full-time and associate faculty and staff.
  • Provide leadership in the development of effective teaching and learning strategies, as well as outcomes assessment tools.
  • Represent the division in articulation, transfer, and/or partnership activities with area high schools, other colleges, four-year institutions, and business and industry, and coordinate these activities with other Instructional Deans.
  • Seek and/or coordinate the seeking of alternative sources of revenue to help move department and division needs/initiatives forward.
  • Provide oversight for grant development and implementation.
  • Ensure compliance with all grants within the division.
  • Establish and maintain identified FTES targets, monitor and manage class enrollments, student-faculty ratios, and faculty loads, and work with department heads to adjust class schedules and offerings as needed.
  • In coordination with department heads and faculty, develop the annual course schedule, and adjust as needed throughout the year.
  • Working with faculty, review, renovate, eliminate, and create department degree and certificate programs to ensure quality and relevancy.
  • Oversee catalog preparation as it pertains to the division.
  • With department input, assist in developing and marketing student recruitment plans.
  • Represent division and department needs to the administration and other college departments regarding resources, space, and facilities.
  • Collaborate with faculty to facilitate development and support of new instructional directions and initiatives, such as the Pathways Initiative and the college’s Comprehensive Plan.
  • Develop and manage budgets of the division.
  • Address student concerns (e.g., grade complaints).
  • Be responsible for student retention and success within the division.
  • Chair and/or participate in college-wide committees and meetings, including the college Art Committee.
  • Attend Technical Advisory Committee meetings for professional/technical programs.

 


This is an exempt position that reports to the Vice President of Instruction.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in one of the disciplines in the divisions or equivalent education and experience.
  • A minimum of three years, OR equivalent, of full-time teaching experience, preferably at a community college.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in a teamwork environment.
  • Recent administrative or leadership experience, preferably at a community college.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in budget management.
  • Demonstrated grant management experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse educational and work environment.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and collaborative leadership style.
  • Independent and self-motivated working style.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with community or industry partners such as K-12 school districts, transfer institutions, businesses, and agencies.

 


PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is typically performed in an office setting, and onsite/in-person. The ability to sit at a desk/computer station, bend, stoop, walk and generally move around the office to consult with others, work within a busy environment and remain focused on tasks. Excellent communication skills are essential. This includes the ability to speak clearly and fully comprehend written and spoken English and will include communication with people for whom English is not their first language. This also includes the ability to produce clearly written documents.

 


COMPENSATION:

Salary is $106,555.64 - $112,709.66 and is based on the Edmonds CC administrative/exempt salary schedule, plus a full state benefits package, which includes tuition waivers for college classes, medical, dental, retirement options and more. Vacation and leave package includes 12 sick days per year, 11 scheduled holidays, 1 personal holiday, and 24 vacation leave days per year.

 


WORK SCHEDULE:

Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., including some evenings and weekends.

 


FLSA Status:

The position is an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act requirements.

 


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
