Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Counseling Psychologist II for Rutgers Student Health. Under the general supervision of the Director of Counseling, ADAP, and Psychiatric Services (CAPS), or designee, and under the supervision of a designated licensed staff psychologist offers a full range of psychological interventions for students including triage, crisis intervention, clinical case management and structured group and individual treatment.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Offers prevention, intervention and postvention community-based services for faculty, staff and students.
  • Collaborates with other professionals in a multi-disciplinary University based mental health service and will provide a substantial amount of service in a primary healthcare setting.
  • May offer mentoring and supervision for first year doctoral student in clinical psychology.
  • Conduct screening, triage, assessment and crisis intervention and offer support and appropriate levels of intervention for students.
  • Collaborate effectively with psychiatrists, substance abuse counselors, other medical staff, and community mental health professionals. Evaluate students’ needs for additional services and make appropriate referrals.
  • Provide supportive consultation to faculty, staff, and other students regarding response to students with psychological issues and concerning behaviors.
  • Responsible, on rotation, for responding to requests from Residence Life staff and others for emergency after-hours consultation.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology or related field.
  • At least one year of full-time clinical experience, or equivalent.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Will be eligible for licensure in the state of New Jersey within 2 years of hire.
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Interest/experience with evidence based, culture-centered, structured treatments for common concerns for university students including Depression, anxiety, affective dysregulation, substance abuse and eating difficulties, etc.
  • Familiarity with developmental issues of college students.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and skill in working with diverse students, staff and faculty.
  • Must have a proven track record of interest and/or experience in culture centered, structured, mental health care that has relevance for working with a wide range of university students.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Specialized expertise and/or experience in working with the LGBTQ community and with Students of Color
  • Demonstrated experience in areas relevant to work with university students seeking daytime on- call, walk-in services including triage/rapid assessment; suicide and violence risk screening; skills necessary to conduct brief assessments and to offer guidance for students to pursue appropriate levels of care to address acute and/or persistent concerns (including inpatient, partial hospital and intensive outpatient levels of care).
  • Special interest in working in a primary care setting with experience in this area preferred.

Immunization Requirements


Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.
