Overview
The Office for Research’s core mission is to advance Rutgers’s preeminence in research. The Office for Research (OFR or Research) provides essential services university-wide that support faculty research and scholarship. The OFR teams support identifying sponsored award funding opportunities, submission of grant proposals, post-award financial management, negotiation of contracts, research regulatory affairs, intellectual property and commercialization activities, core services, and animal care provided by the Comparative Medicine Resources organization.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Veterinary Technician for the Office for Research. As part of the Office for Research, this position organizes non-commercial international and domestic animal shipments between external institutions for the New Brunswick and Piscataway campuses.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Schedules and conducts all routine health monitoring for animal colonies and manages quarantine spaces, in order to maintain the animal health standard for rodent colonies to preserve the integrity of animal research and facility biosecurity traffic patterns.
  • Performs routine veterinary care and support including, but not limited to: animal exams, collection of biological samples, basic surgical procedures, etc. on a wide variety of species.
  • Administers medications/treatments to affected animals throughout the University.
  • Assists with training of investigators and research staff regarding surgical and scientific techniques as well as federal and local regulations.
  • Makes routine rounds of facilities and labs to ensure animal health.
  • Prepares, performs, and submits lab work as needed.
  • Maintains inventory of drugs, surgical, and veterinary supplies.
  • Provides assistance to the University laboratory animal veterinarians in their duties.
  • Provides technical services to research staff which can include dosing, sample collection from. rodent and large animal species as well as surgical support.
  • Participates in veterinary services on call weekend and holiday support.
  • Other duties as necessary and assigned.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in veterinary technology, biology, animal science, or other related science, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • A minimum of two years experience in a laboratory or animal care facility preferably including work in both small animal veterinary practices and the animal research environment.
Certifications/Licenses
  • AALAS certification at the LATg level (A bachelor’s degree plus three or more years of hands-on animal handling experience may be substituted for the LATg certification).
  • New Jersey driver’s license and two years of driving experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience with restraint, handling and veterinary care of the commonly used research animal species.
  • AALAS certification at the LATg level (A bachelor’s degree plus three or more years of hands-on animal handling experience may be substituted for the LATg certification).
  • Must participate in the occupational health program for animal workers, which requires a preplacement medical evaluation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree with an emphasis on veterinary technology, biology, animal science, or other related science.
  • Previous experience in coordinating animal health surveillance or shipping programs in the care and use of laboratory animals.

  • Anesthesia machines; pulse oximeter; ventilator; glass bead sterilizers; autoclaves; euthanasia
  • chamber; ventilated mouse racks; metabolic cages; animal restrainers; laminar flow hoods; surgical staples; computer; fax machine/printer.
  • Materials include, but are not limited to: Surgical instruments; scalpel blades; sutures; syringes and needles; catheters; dissection instruments; controlled substances (e.g. narcotics); formaldehyde; general veterinary supplies (medications, treatment supplies, surgical supplies); oxygen tanks; inhalation anesthesia; medical waste; blood collection supplies
  • Software includes: Microsoft Office; Adobe Acrobat; custom web-based animal care program management software
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • This position requires the ability to lift 50 lbs., twisting of upper trunk, repetitive and overhead lifting and reaching.
  • Additionally, the position requires the ability to stand or walk on hard surfaces for most of the workday.
  • The work environment includes potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, and the use of hazardous and restricted chemicals.
  • Must be able to read, write, follow instructions, and communicate in the English language.
  • This position may require work after hours, weekends and/or holidays.
Special Conditions
  • Must undergo criminal background check in order to work with controlled substances (e.g. narcotics, barbiturates)
