Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Program Manager (Pathology) in Biospecimen Repository Services at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
The primary purpose of the Program Manager (Pathology) is to supervise and coordinate the grossing of all human tissue specimens under the supervision of the Director of the BRHS and RWJBH Surgical Pathology Director. Provides daily work direction to all Pathologist Assistants and assist in the diagnosis of human disease. Provides technical, administrative and educational assistance to members of the lab and other departments. Assists in the research goals and objectives of the Bio-specimen Repository Service shared resource, as specified by the NIH-National Cancer Institute support grant (CCSG) awarded to the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Commits to continuous quality improvement, excellent patient care and outstanding cancer research.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Supervises the grossing of research human tissue specimens as needed to meet the goals and objectives of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Performs frozen sectioning of tissue specimens for immediate diagnosis. Grosses all types of tissue specimens autonomously, including complex resections. Dictates accurate specimen description and selects appropriate sections for submission, in order to facilitate the patient’s diagnosis in the most efficient manner possible. Photographs selected gross specimens and shares with the pathologist. 
  • Supervises and trains CINJ Pathologist’s Assistants for research tissue acquisition, labeling and appropriate research database input as well as pathology archive retrieval process for Cancer Institute research use and/or diagnostic testing send-outs. Provides clinical job duty training for CINJ Pathologist’s Assistants. Coordinates daily research and clinical activities of CINJ Pathologist’s Assistants in conjunction with the RWJBH Director of Anatomic Pathology, BRHS Director, BRS Program Manager and attending pathologist.
  • Coordinates with the RWJBH Pathology Manager to ensure appropriate coverage between hospital and Rutgers
    CINJ staff to cover scheduled time-off requests. Works with anatomic pathology staff and leaders to provide seamless work flow.
  • Interviews for hiring, supervises and conducts annual evaluations for CINJ Pathologist Assistant, handles performance issues. Reviews new probationary CINJ staff at 6 months post hire for competency, proficiency and performance.
  • Ensures that all CINJ Pathologist Assistant are assigned to obtain anonymize pathology reports for all tissue retrieval tissue specimens. Keeps appropriate records relating to such procedures. Complies with all HIPAA regulations and Institutional Review Board regulations for the protection of human subjects. Trained in OnCore, EPIC and required biospecimen databases and ensures CINJ PA staff are trained.
  • Supervises the retrieval of all Cancer Institute of New Jersey archive projects and diagnostic send outs at the hospital site for the Cancer Institute of New Jersey research Bio-specimen Repository Service. Trains appropriate lab staff in the transport, data recording and labeling procedures.
  • Responsible for the identification and tracking of any CINJ research specimens requiring special prepping procedures before being shipped to research facilities.
  • Responsible for maintaining current knowledge and fully complying with OSHA, JCAHO, federal, state, local, RWJBH and Rutgers rules and regulations as they pertain to surgical pathology section of the laboratory and Biospecimen Repository Services.
  • Plans and prepares for CINJ pathology conferences and education sessions by preparing agenda, material, specimens, photographs and reports.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in a health discipline. 
  • Four (4) years of related experience.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Pathologists’ Assistant certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
  • Maintenance of ASCP certification by required yearly CME’s.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must demonstrate the ability to meet all regulatory requirements for Rutgers/RWJUH/CINJ
  • Effective oral and written communication skills. 
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Laboratory environment. Exposure to blood, excrement, anti-neoplastic drugs and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory. Exposure to hazardous chemicals.
