Position Description:

A postdoctoral research scholar position or a Research scientist position is available in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Divisions of Hematology/Oncology. Research in laboratory is focused underlying mechanisms of thrombo-inflammation in context of ischemic stroke and atherosclerosis. We use molecular and cellular techniques, along with genetically modified mice to investigate role of adhesion molecules in pathophysiology of ischemic stroke. We have several mutant mice and experimental models to study stroke. My lab is also part of the SPAN network “The University of Iowa Stroke Preclinical Assessment Center for Neuroprotection in Stroke”. The main objective of the SPAN network is to address this need by prioritizing the testing of different neuroprotective agents in humans based on their measured comparative efficacy in experimental stroke models. Notably, the NIH SPAN has funded six centers (my lab is one of them) along with SPAN coordinating center at the national level to test up to six promising interventions, including "Uric acid" for neuroprotection with the same rigor as used by multicenter clinical trials.


 


Duties and responsibilities: Conduct research in field of thrombosis, inflammation and stroke, in a collaborative environment. Responsible for experimental design, collecting and analysis of research data, maintaining log book, preparation of manuscripts, presentations at scientific conferences and workshops etc. Duties will also include training graduate students and research assistants. Candidates must have good communication and writing skills in English.

Education Requirement:

Candidates must have a PhD or a MD degree in a biological science.

Required Qualifications:

Pre or post doctoral experience in either studying stroke (transient, permanent and hemorrhagic), traumatic brain injury, experimental models of arterial thrombosis and/ or inflammation. Candidate must have experience in stroke surgery, handling mice and managing colonies. 

Desirable Qualifications:

Technical skills such as RNA isolation, RT- PCR, PCR, Western, isolation and culture of endothelial cells will be a plus and taken into consideration. Knowledge of Word, Power point, Excel, Sigma plots etc. are required. First author or co-author publications will be a plus and taken into consideration
