The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC, is seeking a senior-level, highly motivated technology accelerator manager to join APL's Legal and Commercialization Branch. 

 

The technology accelerator manager is responsible for identifying high potential technologies and developing their commercial strategy through consultation with APL staff and leadership, market research and business planning, and by leveraging the technology development resources of APL.

 

As a technology accelerator manager:

  • You will work across APL and with Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures to identify a set of high-value technologies and align strategy (e.g., licensing to industry, start-up creation, etc.) and resource allocation to facilitate technological development for commercial end-use.
  • You will coordinate with APL’s Tech Transfer team and APL leadership to develop relationships with industry to create new sponsored research, licensing and venture-creation opportunities.
  • You will connect with APL staff who are conducting commercially relevant research and developing technology to raise awareness about commercialization and connect them with appropriate resources.
  • You will assist the Tech Transfer team in developing technology licensing strategies and screening potential licensees for future startups.
  • Interacts with potential startups including but not limited to business model development, mentor matching, and fund-raising support.
  • Supports development and execution of programs and events for startup education.
  • Assists in the development of reports summarizing the status of key projects and overall translational activity.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, aeronautical engineering, computer science, or other physical science or engineering field with 10 years of industry and technical experience.
  • Must have the ability to understand complex technologies, demonstrated by relevant technical training or technology transfer experience.
  • Must have knowledge of intellectual property principles, and experience with technology transfer and technology development.
  • Have strong leadership, communication, research, analytical, organizational, creative, and problem solving skills.
  • Have the capacity to positively and proactively interact with APL innovators, APL management, and industry contacts.
  • Must be able to flex between strategic thinking and hands-on management of programs, projects and processes.
  • Must have strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make decisions, with the ability to multi-task under deadline pressure.
  • Must be able to network and interact, as well as support effective partnerships with key groups and individuals.
  • Must have strong verbal/written communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. To ensure the safety and well-being of the community, APL has established a policy requiring that all staff be vaccinated against COVID-19.   • Are able to obtain Secret level personnel security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Are willing and able to travel up to 10% of the time.

  • Have an additional degree above the required, such as a MS, Ph.D. or an MBA.
  • Have experience in marketing and communications campaigns, especially related to technology marketing.
  • Have entrepreneurial experience starting and building start-up companies.
