Summary of Position

The Department of Environmental & Sustainability Studies at Keene State College invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Environmental Science beginning August 2023. We are especially interested in candidates who use field-based methodologies and who integrate scientific analyses of environmental processes with nuanced understandings of social justice. Applicants should have a research and teaching program that addresses global environmental issues, but which can also be applied to teaching our students about the physical environment of New England where our campus is located. This position is part of an interdisciplinary department with a large number of majors and minors who have broad interests in environmental studies, earth science, ecology, management, planning, and sustainability. The classes offered by our department serve programs in Environmental Studies, Sustainability Studies, Inequality Studies, and others. The successful candidate will be able to teach introductory courses in environmental studies and sustainability as well as develop classes in geoscience, ecology, water resource management, conservation, or environmental health. The teaching load is twelve credits, typically three 4-credit courses, per academic semester. Additional responsibilities include participating in departmental activities and campus-wide committees, maintaining an active record of scholarship, and professional development. As part of their regular teaching responsibilities at this public liberal arts college, faculty members will teach both disciplinary courses and courses in our general education curriculum which is called the ‘Integrative Studies Program.’ For more information about this program, please see: http://www.keene.edu/isp/.

Acceptable Minimum Qualifications

PhD in a discipline related to Environmental Science and a minimum of one year of teaching experience at the college level. Candidates that are ABD near completion will also be considered, but the PhD must be completed August 1, 2023.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Our department strives to offer our students engaging educational experiences that transcend the typical classroom lecture. These include outdoor activities, field experiences, travel courses, capstone research partnerships with community organizations, conservation internships, and student-faculty collaborative research opportunities. We prefer candidates that can demonstrate a commitment to developing these kinds of educational opportunities, and welcome applications from established educators with experience delivering them. The ability to teach methods courses (field methods, GIS, qualitative or quantitative methods) is also a plus. Additionally, the College has identified desirable qualifications that support our commitment to creating and maintaining a diverse campus community including the ability to speak a second language or to bring a multicultural perspective to the campus.

Salary Information

Salary is based on the prevailing Collective Bargaining Unit Agreement, rank minimum for an Assistant Professor is $73,750 starting 2023-24. Salary is complemented by a comprehensive benefits package.
