Summary

The University of Michigan-Dearborn (UM-Dearborn) is one of the three campuses of the University of Michigan system. UM-Dearborn is a comprehensive university offering high quality undergraduate, graduate, professional, and continuing education to residents of southeastern Michigan, and currently enrolls just over 8,000 students. Faculty and students have the opportunity to collaborate across all three campuses in research and scholarly activity. UM-Dearborn is located 10 miles west of downtown Detroit and 35 miles east of Ann Arbor. The campus is strategically located on 200 suburban acres of the original Henry Ford Estate in the Greater Detroit Metropolitan Region.

The Office of Academic Success and the Mathematics and Statistics department seeks a Math Learning Coordinator who will lead the operations and strategic direction of the Math Learning Center.

This is a leadership position aimed at revitalizing student support within the Center to provide evidence-based support and high impact practices to a commuter student body, with significant numbers of first generation and Pell eligible students. Responsibilities include coordinating multiple modes of student engagement including traditional one on one tutoring, supplemental instruction, and resources and programming development that supports student learning. The Math Learning Center is a key unit within the Office of Academic Success and this position will collaborate with the faculty, students, and staff in the Office as well to coordinate support. 

Additionally, the Math Learning Coordinator will be charged with collaborating with faculty in the scholarship of teaching and learning, implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of a new math placement policy, and will have a role in managing student employees, including training and professional development. 

An ideal candidate will have experience working with student success and retention initiatives including diversity, equity, and inclusion with campus partners and be able to demonstrate how this experience translates into the Math Learning Coordinator position in their cover letter. 

This position reports to the Director of Academic Success and to the Chair of the Mathematics and Statistics Department in the College and Arts, Letters, and Science. The position and the center will also work closely with Tutoring Services and the other Learning Centers to ensure effective student support services are provided to all students at UM-Dearborn. 

Responsibilities*

  • Manage and coordinate all office functions and day-to-day operations of the Math Learning Center; assist students with tutoring, when needed; maintain and update content for website; contribute to marketing activities; maintain Math Learning Center usage statistics and generate usage and prerequisite reports; design and produce an annual report/assessment of effectiveness; address student concerns
  • Develop and execute collaborations with mathematics and statistics faculty to address retention and diversity, equity, and inclusion; plan special tutoring events; prepare supplemental materials for students; work with faculty on make-up exam monitoring; assist with override process
  • Implement and evaluate math placement policy and coordinate placement exam; communicate placement information with new students and with the offices of Admissions and Orientation; participate in professional development opportunities that focus on placement; generate reports on placement
  • Assist in managing peer learning students such as tutors, Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SILs), and active learning assistants including hiring, periodic observations/evaluations and address tutor/SIL concerns
  • Identify/develop professional development for tutors/SIL that are rooted in mathematical pedagogy and peer learning practices
  • Represent the Math Learning Center when needed at university events and meetings, occasionally giving remarks; develop materials to promote the Center and services offered; assist with grant writing, when appropriate 

Required Qualifications*

  • Master’s Degree in Mathematics or a related field 
  • Experience or familiarity with undergraduate level mathematics curriculum
  • A high degree of initiative and resourcefulness
  • Experience related to the statement of duties and responsibilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to set priorities, handle multiple assignments and deadlines
  • Ability to display excellent judgment while operating in a flexible and professional manner; ability to respond positively to changing priorities and receive direction from multiple people
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and maximum collaboration in a team environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills 
  • Literacy with the main types of office software
  • Ability to work effectively and diplomatically with faculty, staff, and students under a variety of circumstances 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion

Desired Qualifications*

  • Scholarly products and activities on teaching and learning at post secondary level
  • Experience with student success and retention initiatives
  • Teaching experience in mathematics at undergraduate level 
  • Familiarity / some knowledge of math placement exams/processes

Work Schedule

Office environment with typical working hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm, though hours may be flexible to accommodate center needs (some evening or weekend possible). Hybrid or flex scheduling when/if possible.
