Isotope Geochemistry Postdoc

Job Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Energy Geosciences Division has an opening for a Isotope Geochemistry Postdoc in the general area of Isotope Geochemistry.

The Fundamental Geosciences group at LBNL is conducting a broad search for postdoctoral scholars with expertise in isotope geochemistry to contribute to ongoing research in fundamental geochemistry and its role in sedimentary, diagenetic, hydrothermal, chemo-mechanical, and environmental processes. Our current project goals and participants are described HERE , but the research scope is continually evolving and a broad range of geoscience problems related to the objectives of the BES Geoscience program are in play.

Our group provides an exciting, multidisciplinary environment in which complementary, cutting-edge experimental and modeling approaches are used to address complex geologic systems and problems. Our investigators are experts in a broad range of geoscience fields and methods. Successful applicants can expect to have a lead mentor and to conduct research within one or more of the project topic areas.

What You Will Do:

  • Carry out experiments, and conduct isotopic analysis of natural and experimental samples. Example materials include carbonate and clay-rich sedimentary rocks as well as serpentinites.
  • Provide disciplinary expertise in isotope geochemistry for collaborations involving scientists from other disciplines.
  • Contribute to method development, management, and operation of one or more of our isotope labs (thermal ionization, multicollector-ICPMS, and stable isotopes including clumped isotope studies and non-traditional metal isotopes).
  • Publish peer-reviewed journal articles and present work at scientific conferences, as well as Contribute to progress reports and team deliverables.
  • Contribute to the development of conceptual and quantitative models for isotopic effects produced in geochemical processes, and provide disciplinary expertise in isotope geochemistry to the collaboration.
  • Work creatively, independently, and productively.
  • Work as a member of a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Contribute to progress reports and team deliverables.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Earth science, chemistry, materials science or relevant STEM field involving isotope geochemistry.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform research that addresses fundamental questions in geochemistry.
  • Expertise and experience in isotopic measurement of earth materials.
  • Ability to work creatively, independently, and productively.
  • Ability to work as a member of a large multidisciplinary research team.
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills.
  • Record of timely publications.

The position will remain open until filled. However, for full consideration, please apply by December 17, 2022 with the following application materials:

  • Cover Letter - Describe your interest in this position and the relevance of your background (1 page preferred, 2 pages maximum).
