Job Summary

Under supervision, the Staff Research Associate typically performs a wide variety of standard repetitive procedures without detailed technical supervision, usually in a well-established occupational field (i.e., chemistry, microbiology, etc.). They may also modify, vary or adapt standard procedures to meet the needs of research projects, or improve tests that are unsatisfactory, and after studying available literature, analyze and alter conditions under which determinations are made. They may also acquire and apply a body of knowledge and skill in a field of comparatively narrow scope where the emphasis is on specialized techniques

One of our major objectives  is to understand the mechanism of virus-host interaction, and the goal of the project in which this position is involved is to clarify the mechanism of HIV latency in primary CD4+ T cells.
The Staff Research Associate II (SRA II) will play an important role in supporting various experimental efforts in the lab. The SRA II will interact primarily with the PI.

We are seeking a highly motivated SRA II to participate in this exciting project. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting experiments using primary T cells derived from HIV-negative and -positive donors. Required skills include tissue culture of primary T cells, isolation of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells from blood, FACS sorting, lentiviral preparation and infection, RNA and protein extraction from cells, RT-qPCR, and western blotting. The successful candidate will also be expected to analyze and present data.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Division of Rheumatology is a part of the Department of Medicine (DOM) at UCSF. The mission of the Rheumatology Division includes research, teaching and patient care. The Division has activities at multiple sites including Parnassus, Laurel Heights and Mission Bay. The Division runs several clinical practices, conducts basic and clinical research, and educates medical students, residents, clinical fellows and postdoctoral scholars. In addition, the Division has significant and complex financial and administrative relationships with DOM and the UCSF Medical Center, as well as large patient care programs, large clinical, federal, and privately supported research programs and seven faculty laboratories. The Rheumatology Division has 17 full-time faculty, nine clinical fellows, seven post-doctoral research fellows, seven WOS faculty, and 23 research and administrative staff. The Division has a sponsored research portfolio of $10+ million per year including over 40 sponsored awards, as well at the Russell Engleman Rheumatology Research Center which has an endowment principal of $30 million and generates income of $1.3 million per year in support of its clinical, research, training, and service missions. The PREMIER Center is a P30 resource-based core center funded by NIH / NIAMS. Its mission is to promote research in precision medicine across the UCSF campus through the provision of specific services, consultations, educational activities, and pilot funding.


Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree in infectious diseases or other related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.  
  • Recent research experience in a virology laboratory.
  • Knowledge and/or Experience with Primary cell isolation and culture.
  • Knowledge and/or Experience with Lentiviral production and infection.
  • FACS sorting.
  • Coursework experience with general cell culture techniques including maintenance of cell lines, isolation of RNA and DNA.
  • Computer skills including the use of Microsoft office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and software for data analysis (e.g. FLOJO).
  • Ability to  perform routine calculations (E.g., preparation of chemical reagents and serial dilutions).
  • Supplement knowledge by reading protocols and scientific manuscripts when necessary.
  • A willingness to be trained to perform new experimental techniques as necessary.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff and with external contacts in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a scientific research team
  • Organizational and critical thinking skills, lab notebook practices and attention to details are essential
  • Ability to work well in a team environment with heavy workloads and tight deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • MD degree in infectious disease or related science.
  • Coursework and/or experience in immunologic techniques such as flow cytometry.
  • Knowledge of protein biochemistry and immunochemistry including SDS-PAGE, western blotting, luciferase measurement, RTqPCR.
