Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate (SRA) provides support for users of the Gnotobiotic Core mouse facility, including basic facility maintenance and husbandry within gnotobiotic isolators, such as monitoring food, water, and bedding conditions, monitoring stocks of consumables and reordering in a timely manner, and maintaining detailed records of tasks performed, in addition to other duties as assigned. 

The successful candidate will also have the ability to perform advanced experimental techniques as needed to help to Core users as they plan and execute experiments (for example, the SRA may administer experimental agents via oral, i.p., or subcutaneous routes, and follow up with experimental disease scoring and tracking, dissection and processing of tissues, or other techniques deemed experimentally necessary on behalf of Core users).  Lab techniques performed by the SRA may include (but are not limited to): DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, microbial cultures, gram staining, and genotyping. 

The SRA is also expected to participate in research and development of new techniques and methods for the core facility, which may lead to scientific publications and follow-up experiments.  S/he must be comfortable performing mouse health checks and interacting with UCSF veterinary and facilities staff as necessary.  We are looking for a detail-oriented and self-directed person who has the desire to learn new skill sets, contribute to the problem-solving nature of our facility, and can help to manage day-to-day requirements of the facility.  Direct supervision and training will be provided for the Staff Research Associate.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Hooper Foundation is housed within the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, which is a basic science department within the School of Medicine that performs scientific research, training and teaching at Mission Bay and Parnassus Heights. It is also the home department for the multidisciplinary UCSF Immunology Program and Microbial Pathogenesis Program. The fields of Microbiology and Immunology encompass many aspects of human health and a goal of our research is to further the basic understanding of microbes and the immune system, as well as translate this knowledge into improvement of human health. Research in the department focuses on areas related to infectious diseases, immunology, and cancer. Our department also provides advanced research training to Postdoctoral Fellows. Graduate students working towards their Ph.D. degree are enrolled in the Herbert W. Boyer Program in Biological Sciences (PIBS) or the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Graduate Programs, depending on their research emphasis.


Required Qualifications

SRA I:  

  • BA/BS in Biology, Microbiology, Lab animal science or a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, basic techniques and methods required by the position, or equivalent combination of education and experience; At this level, direct supervision and training will be provided.
  • Practical knowledge of lab safety and general mouse handling (including documentation of tasks performed)
  • Detail oriented and capable of working independently
  • Evidence of precise communication skills and record keeping
  • Basic mouse handling and husbandry
SRA II:  In addition to the above
  • Minimum of one or more years of recent, directly related work experience after degree completion utilizing techniques and methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced mouse skills including: restraint, oral gavage, intraperitoneal injection, breeding (plug and pregnancy checks, determining age and sex of litters)
  • Lab skills including the ability to prepare, perform, and interpret the following assays: aerobic and anaerobic cultures, DNA extraction, qPCR, standard PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, genotyping, gram stain
  • Experience training others in basic mouse protocols
  • Basic knowledge about Gnotobiotic work, including how to prepare supply cylinders, sterilize, and introduce supplies into isolators with sterile technique
