Human Microbiome; Microbial Genetics and Genomics

National Institutes of Health

Job Description

Our laboratory utilizes experimental and computational biology to explore human-associated microbiota (bacteria, fungi, virus) that contribute to health and disease. We have two areas of focus, exploring the skin microbiome and hospital outbreaks of multi-drug resistant organisms. We analyze shotgun metagenomics datasets combined with sequence of cultured isolates obtained from human clinical studies to generate hypotheses about microbial colonization or infection. Models are tested in vitro and in animal models. See papers from the laboratory including Saheb Kashaf, Nature Microbiology 2022; Huang Cell Host Microbe 2021; Proctor Nature Medicine 2021.
Postdoctoral fellows are fully-integrated into basic-translational research with a range of collaborators in dermatology, infectious disease, and epidemiology. NHGRI has excellent training opportunities to interact with other laboratories and core facilities, including NIH sequencing center, bioinformatics, mouse CRISPR transgenesis. As well, we are actively engaged in natural history patient studies at the research-based NIH Clinical Center.

Qualifications:
  • Seeking applicant with interest in microbial genomics, models of infection, bacterial genetics, computational biology or bioinformatics.
  • Background in genetic or genomic analysis, microbiology or statistics useful.
  • Candidates must have a PhD or an MD degree awarded within the past 5 years.

To Apply:

Motivated candidates who wish to join a group of enthusiastic scientists are requested to send by e-mail: CV, a brief statement of research interests and the names of three references to:
