Position Highlights

The University of Arizona (UA) Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory (SO) is seeking candidates for one Postdoctoral Research Associate position. The Department of Astronomy/Steward Observatory is a vibrant hub of technological innovations in both observational and theoretical astrophysics with over 80 faculty members, new instruments, data processing methods, theoretical models, and numerical algorithms are constantly being developed.

The successful applicant will be encouraged to integrate into Dr. Kate Daniel's group, which has three graduate students and another post doc working on problems in galactic dynamics. Dr. Daniel's group is also part of a mentorship network that spans multiple institutions which provides networking opportunities with leading astronomers across the country with a broad range of expertise. The successful candidate will also be part of the Astrophysics Theory group at U Arizona.

Applicants will specifically work on expanding the exploration of kinematic structures in the local Milky Way volume to include chemistry and ages with the aim to disentangle various processes that have contributed to the evolution of the disk.

A fraction of the time will be made available for independent research and new projects in related areas.

This is a year-to-year appointment, expected to last three years, contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Analysis of chrono-chemodynamic data in the local MW volume.
  • Disk galaxy modeling and simulations.
  • Mentorship of a graduate student.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have completed all the requirements of a PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, or related field by the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in modeling spiral galaxies, galactic dynamics, and/or working with Gaia data.
  • Experience working on MW chemistry and/or ages.
  • Experience with data analysis from one of more of the following: surveys: Gaia, GALAH, APOGEE, SDSS-V Milky Way Mapper, TESS.
  • Experience with galactic archaeology.
  • Experience modeling dynamical systems.
