Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, has an immediate need for a full-tine Senior Instructional Assistant in the Biology Department. The work schedule is 1:30PM to 10:00PM on Monday to Thursday and 8:30AM to 5:00PM on Fridays. This position supports the late afternoon and evening lab and evening instructions. Flexibility will be needed to cover occasional weekends and daytime. This is a bargaining, non-exempt, grade 25 position. Non-exempt positions are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. The Senior Instructional Assistant will provide lab assistance to the Instructional Lab Coordinators and Instructional Lab Manager. The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Set up lab exercises prior to the classes
  • Break down lab exercises when completed
  • Disposal and removal of used materials
  • Safe disposal of hazardous waste
  • Maintain and enforce laboratory safety rules and regulations
  • Storage and cleanup of equipment and glassware
  • Clean lab bench surfaces
  • Safe storage of chemicals and lab media
  • Restock instructional labs in between classes
  • Check student set ups for completeness
  • Make stock solutions for various assays
  • Maintain inventory for laptops, iPads and supplies
  • Help in cleaning green house and fish tanks
  • Check eye wash stations and safety showers
  • Feed organisms, water plants as needed or requested
  • Recalibrate spectrophotometers and micropipettes as needed
  • Troubleshoot instructional labs
  • May need to take responsibilities of a specific lab course planning and set up
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, clean, and orderly learning environment

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or in a closely relevant field or any combination of education and training providing understanding of the field.
  • Two years of experience in a laboratory appropriate to the position assignment, setting up and maintaining appropriate materials and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the methods, procedures, principles, practices, and techniques of assigned subject area laboratory work, tools, equipment and materials, and hazard/safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures, instructional technology, usage of microscopes, spectrophotometers, electronic balances, centrifuges, pipettors, incubators, electrophoresis equipment.
  • Knowledge of educational materials employed in assigned instructional laboratory, and administrative practices and procedures, including obtaining materials and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use office applications such as word processing, spreadsheet, etc., and internet and Windows-based applications.
  • Skill and ability to operate and perform necessary maintenance on laboratory equipment. Skill in problem solving and mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize work and to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences is preferred.
  • Three years of experience, within the last 10 years, in a laboratory, setting up and maintaining appropriate materials and equipment in an academic instructional setting.
  • Three years of experience in lab techniques such as: trouble shooting, maintaining and repairing small lab equipment; handling and proper disposing of bio-hazard materials; maintaining lab inventory; organizing lab facilities and maintaining a clean and safe learning environment.
  • Experience designing instructional laboratory exercises.

Hiring Range $26.88 to $34.93 per hour. Initial salary placement is based on candidate experience and internal equity.
