Applications are currently being accepted for Student Services Assistant in the Financial Aid department, located at San Diego Mesa College. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 8am-6pm, Friday, 8am-1pm. Selected candidate must be willing to adjust work days/hours based on the department's needs.

Under the direction of the Financial Aid Officer or designee, provide technical assistance to students regarding FAFSA, financial aid questions, concerns, interpret college and District policies and procedures and assist students in the successful completion and adherence to said policies and procedures. This position will serve as a generalist helping to support students and works collaboratively with various student services departments providing resources and support for academic success and completion.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Explain to special populations including, foster youth, Dreamer's and formerly incarcerated students how to navigate through the pre-enrollment process including, but not limited to, online orientation completion, pre-assessment workshops, and assessment.
  • Refer former students to other departments of community services.
  • Interpret and apply academic and financial aid policies and procedures within a higher education setting.
  • Establish and maintain successful working relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Process aid applications and forms; review records for changes in status, request additional information as needed.
  • Prepare and transmit correspondence for students.
  • Maintain confidential files and records.
  • Compile data and prepare reports.
  • Use technology in the delivery of student services.
  • Assist students with the FAFSA and Dream Act aid application process
  • Maintain data exchange with CSAC using WebGrants

Please note that an employee may be transferred to any site at the option of the Chancellor.

Desired Qualifications:
The successful applicant will have possession of a high school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of experience in a customer or student service setting working directly with customers or students and the ability to:

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Interpret and apply academic policies and procedures within a higher education setting.
  • Establish and maintain successful working relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Maintain confidential files and records.
  • Use technology in the delivery of student services.

Knowledge of:

  • Academic policies and procedures.
  • College rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Admissions, enrollment, and testing requirements.
  • Federal and State Financial Aid programs, rules and regulations.
  • Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
  • Oral and written communications skills.
  • District organization, operations, policies and objectives.
  • Applicable sections of State Education Codes and other laws.

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Review and interpret transcripts
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Effectively use technology within a college setting.
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Interpret and explain rules, regulations, procedures, policies and catalogs regarding student admission, transcript evaluation, prerequisite requirements and special regulations.
  • Prepare, process, and transmit a variety of student information.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Plan and organize work.
  • Maintain confidential files and records.
  • Train and provide work direction to others.
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Compile data and prepare reports.
  • Assist program director with planning and improvement of procedure.


Pay Information:
Range 16 ($3,234.83 - $5,163.51) per month based on the current Classified salary schedule. New employees will begin on Step A ($3,234.83), Step B ($3,396.57) with 18 months of verified, paid, full-time equivalent related job experience or up to Step C ($3,566.40) with 36 months of verified, paid, full-time equivalent related job experience. For purposes of salary placement, 7.5 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of directly related coursework from a regularly accredited institution will be equivalent to one (1) year of job experience. Promoted or transferred employees will be placed as specified in the CBA. This position is FLSA Non-exempt (may accrue overtime). Excellent Benefits are provided to all Contract employees with assignments greater than, or equal to, 50% (0.50 FTE) and all eligible dependents. A temporary probationary period will apply to the employee entering this assignment.
