Summary

The Physics Division of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Michigan Medicine is recruiting a medical physicist for a research track faculty position.

We are searching for an academic research medical physicist who is interested in joining our team of over 20 faculty and staff physicists.  A typical research track faculty appointment consists of 50% or more research effort with remaining effort in activities such as department and institutional service, academic education, and development projects.

Responsibilities*

The selected applicant is expected to develop a strong research portfolio consisting of independent projects and team-science/collaborative projects that align with the department and division mission and is expected to contribute towards securing external funding as collaborator and/or principal investigator on grant applications.  A successful candidate would also be engaged in academic education within and outside the Department of Radiation Oncology.  This activity could include didactic and practical teaching and training/advising for physics and medical residents, undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and other departmental staff.  The selected faculty member would likely participate in ongoing and/or new translational research and development initiatives.  Current division development areas include, but are not limited to: online adaptive therapy; improving our ability to individualize radiation therapy towards improved patient outcomes; development of quantitative imaging approaches for treatment planning and response modeling; use of state of the art bioinformatics techniques to unify large and disparate data sets to develop realistic multiparameter models of tumor response and normal tissue injury; development and implementation of “big data” and artificial intelligence techniques that will permit us to continuously learn and adapt based on our own experience and others; novel treatment planning optimization and automation strategies; and improving our approaches toward safety and quality.

Within the next 1-3 years, we will be adding online adaptive capabilities with both CBCT and MR guidance to our clinic, and so interest and expertise in online adaptive therapy research, imaging biomarker development, and/or related infrastructure would be considered a plus.

Required Qualifications*

A Ph.D. or equivalent in Physics, Medical Physics, or a related relevant field is required. Evidence of independent and team science research activity/potential, educational and teaching competence/potential, and mentoring/advising experience or potential is also expected.

Desired Qualifications*

Completion of a CAMPEP approved education or training program in medical physics is not required but would be considered a plus.  Board Certification or Board Eligibility by the American Board of Radiology is also not expected, but would allow the candidate to contribute to non-academic effort.

Underfill Statement

This position is posted as a Research Assistant Professor/Research Associate Professor/Research Professor. The rank of the selected candidate will depend upon the candidate’s qualifications. We invite applications for candidates at all career stages and specializations.
