Summary

Job Title:  French/German/Arabic/Spanish Tutors – Kochoff Foreign Language Media Lab

The Kochoff Foreign Language Media Lab located in CASL 3065 and it provides support for all foreign language instruction courses at UMich Dearborn. The Kochoff Media Lab is open 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, and from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Fridays.

The lab includes twenty-one workstations and four workgroup stations, a LaserJet printer, overhead LCD projector, and eight 50inch TVs. Other equipment available in the language lab includes a collection of reference guides, language learning textbooks, educational games, and other materials such as a karaoke machine that are used for various events and activities. The lab is used by students for independent study and faculty members also reserve the lab for course visits. Each workstation includes a desktop computer optimized for language learning.

Student tutors (in Arabic, French, German and Spanish) are hired every semester and are expected to be available on a walk-in basis according to a tutoring schedule. The tutor schedule is set taking into account times the schedule for foreign language courses so as to offer tutoring services before and after relevant courses, and each tutor’s course schedule. During the summer term, only a Spanish tutor is available during Lab hours.

Tutors are expected to work anywhere from 2 to 8 hours a week. Hours are set depending on the students’ class schedule. Starting salary is $13.00. Salary increases are awarded at the discretion of the supervisor. This year the lab will also be piloting online tutoring services.  Lab assistants and tutors also assist the Modern and Classical Language (MCL) faculty with course design by testing new online quizzes and creating content at the request of faculty members. For example, an instructor may ask a student-worker to digitize a pen a paper quiz into a work-in-progress (WIP) or inactive Canvas site that is being used to design a new version of a course. Tutors work closely with lab assistants.

Required Qualifications*

  • Good communication skills and a desire to help others, helping faculty and students.
  • Willingness to work as part of a team composed of lab assistants and language tutors.
  • Willingness to become familiar with all equipment and resources available in the Lab.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previously enrolled in upper level language course
  • Competence/fluency in either French/German/Arabic/Spanish or Chinese
  • Prior tutoring and teaching experience
  • Familiarity with learning management systems and online content development
  • Prior experience working in a computer lab, library, or learning center.
