Overview

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School in the Department of Radiation Oncology, Division of Medical Physics and Biophysics. The successful applicant will participate in an NIH-funded project to develop and translate novel flat-panel x-ray detectors for image-guided radiation oncology.

Located in Boston and the surrounding communities, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a leader in life changing breakthroughs in cancer research and patient care. We are united in our mission of conquering cancer, HIV/AIDS and related diseases. We strive to create an inclusive, diverse, and equitable environment where we provide compassionate and comprehensive care to patients of all backgrounds, and design programs to promote public health particularly among high-risk and underserved populations. We conduct groundbreaking research that advances treatment, we educate tomorrow's physician/researchers, and we work with amazing partners, including other Harvard Medical School-affiliated hospitals.

Responsibilities

The qualified candidate will work with simulated and measured imaging data sets to design, develop and test novel flat-panel x-ray detectors for radiation therapy procedures. This will require independent computational work as well as experiment acquisition and analysis. Frequent communication with internal and external collaborators is expected as well as preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Computational models of novel detector configurations
  • Image acquisition and analysis using commercial or developed tools
  • Evaluation in the context of therapeutic interventions (e. radiation)
  • Designing experiments and executing protocols
  • Effective communication of results

This project is an NIH-funded academic-industrial partnership with Varian Medical Systems, Inc. The goal of this project is to design, develop, construct and test a novel x-ray detector for high quality/low-dose volumetric imaging.

The person hired for this position will join the team in this effort and will participate in the design and development of novel flat-panel detectors for clinical translation. This person will also help with the generation of tools needed for analysis and evaluation of images and help maintain, support, and document shared tools, code base, and data sets.

Qualifications

Candidates with a PhD, MD, MD/PhD or doctoral equivalent, in physics, astronomy, computer science, medical physics, imaging science, engineering or a related subject are invited to apply. The lab is  seeking motivated individuals with well-developed communication skills and the desire and talent to tackle technical problems. Significant programming experience is a must; familiarity with image processing, tomographic reconstruction techniques and/or Monte Carlo simulation packages such as GATE or TOPAS would be valued highly. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to perform both self-directed and guided research are required. Must demonstrate outstanding personal initiative and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Ability to meet deadlines and efficiently multitask is a must.

At Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, we work every day to create an innovative, caring, and inclusive environment where every patient, family, and staff member feels they belong.  As relentless as we are in our mission to reduce the burden of cancer for all, we are equally committed to diversifying our faculty and staff.  Cancer knows no boundaries and when it comes to hiring the most dedicated and diverse professionals, neither do we. If working in this kind of organization inspires you, we encourage you to apply.
