Full Time

71192BR

Job Summary

The IND Laboratory Research and Development Engineering Technician provides engineering technician support to the department to sustain and develop research programs in BSL-2* and BSL-3 facilities. The departmental mission is to discover cures for neurodegenerative diseases. The institute is composed roughly of 100 scientists, postdoctoral fellows and technicians.  Due to significant growth in faculty size, research output, and advancement of biological technologies, the department requires a biological research professional to perform moderately complex engineering assignments to sustain and develop our drug discovery research effort.  Engineering activities include design, development, construction, assembly of scientific equipment, testing of experimental systems, operation of analytical systems, establishment of performance specifications, and documentation of scientific results.

Under the supervision of the IND Lab Manager, the guidance of the Sandler Neurosciences Center Building Engineer, and scientific mentorship with IND faculty, the IND Lab R&D Engineering Tech uses professional engineering concepts to perform moderately complex engineering assignments to sustain the general operation of a large (approx. 26000 square ft) lab on the Mission Bay campus, implements new and optimizes existing scientific laboratory instrumentation, and works on engineering assignments of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors to conduct experimentation and expand scientific research capabilities.  In addition, the person in this position will be required to foster and strengthen personal and professional relationships within the IND and with affiliated vendors and field engineers outside of the UCSF umbrella for the repair of a complex scientific instrument.
