Argonne

Job Description

Postdoctoral Appointee: Traffic Flow & Connected / Automated Vehicles

Argonne National Laboratory (www.anl.gov ), the nation's first national laboratory, conducts leading-edge basic and applied scientific research in virtually every scientific discipline. This position provides an exciting opportunity to work at a top-tier National Lab, interact with world-class faculty and Lab scientists, work on transformative solutions to transportation problems and live in the Chicago area, a global metropolis with stunning architecture, leading cultural and educational institutions, a vibrant economy and a major transportation hub.

Argonne is seeking a post-doctoral candidate to conduct research on how connected and automated vehicles impact energy and mobility using traffic flow models. You will be part of the Vehicle Mobility Systems group (VMS, vms.es.anl.gov ), a large multi-disciplinary team that studies transportation at various scales, from vehicles to entire cities, and develops tools to support this research (e.g. Autonomie, RoadRunner, POLARIS) with energy-efficiency and decarbonization as a main focus. Expertise in the VMS team includes: automotive engineering, systems engineering, optimization, optimal control, controls engineering, aerospace engineering, transportation systems, traffic flow, demand modeling, agent-based modeling, freight logistics, machine-learning, high-performance computing, etc.

In this role, you will help evaluate how energy-saving connected automated vehicle controls perform when inserted in realistic traffic conditions. Responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and maintain traffic flow models, including calibration using real-world sensing data.

  • Develop and maintain linkages between traffic flow models across suites of tools used in the team.

  • Develop traffic and/or vehicle controls and evaluate their impact on mobility and energy-efficiency.

  • Evaluate the feasibility, as well as energy and mobility impacts of connectivity and driving automation in real-world situations.

Position Requirements

  • PhD in civil engineering, with a focus on traffic flow modeling.

  • Knowledge and experience in developing traffic flow models.

  • Experience using platforms such as SUMO, Vissim or Aimsun.

  • Experience changing “under the hood” pieces of traffic flow simulator.

  • Experience calibrating network models using real-world data.

  • Knowledge and experience in programming, esp. C++ and Python.

  • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience with Matlab/Simulink.

  • Knowledge and experience with vehicle or traffic controls development.

  • Knowledge and experience with simulation of connected and automated vehicles.

  • Knowledge and experience in software development, incl. source control, documentation, testing, release generation, etc.

  • Knowledge and experience in large data analytics.
