Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Health & Safety Intermediate in the Environmental Health & Safety and department.   This position will be responsible for providing support to ensure compliance with applicable practices, procedures, standards, laws, rules and regulations such as MIOSHA and OSHA; EGLE and EPA. The chosen candidate's primary role will be to monitor, plan organize, schedule and conduct inspections of facilities, work areas, laboratories, (biosafety, chemical safety) and equipment.  The position is also responsible for coordinating the University's environmental and safety training to faculty, staff, students, and contractors.  This position reports to the Director of Environmental Health & Safety.

Responsibilities*

  • Coordinate comprehensive programs for compliance with local, state and federal environmental, health and safety regulations.
  • Conduct safety inspections of laboratories and facilities to ensure compliance with local, state and federal environmental, health and safety regulations and university policies.
  • Work closely with the Department of Natural Sciences and/or Engineering as the safety contact including scheduling classroom-based laboratory safety training.
  • Update and maintain health and safety documents (e.g., fire extinguisher and AED certifications).
  • Coordinate comprehensive programs for compliance with storm water management permit (National Pollution Discharge Elimination System, or NPDES) program.
  • Maintain an effective Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control (SECS) program.
  • Maintain monthly air emission records in accordance with campus permits (e.g. MAERS--Michigan Air Emission Report System).
  • Conduct inspections for the university’s Spill Prevention and Countermeasures and Pollution Incident Prevention Plan (SPCC/ PIPP).
  • Conduct Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) inspections for the Department of Natural Sciences and/or Engineering.
  • Assist with proper waste disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
  • Respond to emergency situations involving hazardous materials.
  • Maintain medical surveillance/routine employee physical records.
  • Maintain and manage ergonomic audits at UM-Dearborn.
  • Maintain the Department of Environmental Health and Safety website.
  • Implement campus-wide web-based safety training modules and database for compliance purposes.
  • Routinely communicate and advise the EHS Director of the progress and status of assigned projects.
  • Provide administrative and clerical assistance for the EHS Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree is required (Environmental Sciences, Occupational Sciences, or related field preferred).
  • 2 years of field experience or equivalent in relevant science-related field.
  • Basic understanding of local, state and federal environmental, health and safety regulations.
  • Familiar with laboratory safety inspection procedures (general lab safety and biosafety).
  • Knowledge of ergonomic concepts and best practices.
  • DOT or RCRA training (or completion of training within 90 days of hiring).
  • 40 hour HAZWOPER training (or completion of training within 90 days of hiring).
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Must pass a required background check.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical for use of respiratory protection equipment and for emergency response work.
  • Ability to safely lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, organize workload appropriately and remain flexible to changing work assignments.
  • Fundamental working knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint computer applications.
  • Comfortable working with and performing routine calibration of electronic field equipment.

Work Schedule: M-F daytime hours.  Additional work hours required during nights and early mornings, and weekends to respond to emergencies or other time sensitive/ critical events and to provide training for employees or contractors that work weekends or night shifts.

 

Currently this classification is considered exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
